June 2012 Moms

Sometimes I think my job is more stress than its worth.

"Hey chubby are you gunna grab that chart or did your doctor write a note not to do that either?"...quote of the morning from my boss.

Lets rewind. Last week I started having a lot of really frequent BH. When I was at work last Thursday they got painful and I had 6 in 45 minutes so I told my boss I was taking my lunch to go see my MW. He was fine with this and seemed genuinely concerned for my well being.

When I went in I wasn't dilated but she said I was soft. She hooked me up to the monitor and after about a half hour came to the conclusion that I had an irritable uterus. We didn't really discuss what that meant but she said I should go home and kick back for the rest of the day and wrote a note to my boss saying that 40 to 45 hour work weeks were no longer acceptable and she backed me off to no more than 32 a week and no more than 4 days a week (I usually worked 5 8ish hour days).

He didn't seem happy about it but revised the schedule to accommodate. The next day when I came in he informed me that I will be a little shy of a year before the baby is born so he is only going to let me have 6 weeks off...not the 12 that we had agreed on MONTHS ago. I am so angry and am seriously considering if this job is worth keeping.

From then on it has been NOTHING but comments referring to me as chubby, and lazy. I'm done. I never bump from work but this is my protest. I'm going to call and ok it with DH but I'm also moving my last day up to 37 weeks (May 19th) instead of my EDD June 10th. If the nonsense continues I think I will have to give HR a call. I don't know if I'm just being sensitive but this just seems wrong.

  • O...forgot to mention when he yelled at me for not grabbing the chart the second the Doctor dropped it in the box (I'm an optician in an eye doctors office), I was on the phone with another patient setting up an appointment. Not like I was just messing around doing nothing.

  • I would be giving HR a call now. There was a pretty obvious change once you told your boss that you had to cut back your hours at work due to medical reasons.

That's a pretty crappy situation, sorry you have to deal with this right now.

  • I agree with PP, I would definitely call HR right away.

  • Thanks ladies. I took a break and called my DH. He is encouraging that I do the same and call HR. I've never had a boss treat me like this before so I'm not really sure what steps to take or what will even be done. Wish me luck.

  • I am glad you are going to HR.  I wish you the best of luck with this.
  • Big hugs!  I hate conflict, especially at work, so I can only imagine how hard it is to call HR about this.  I would be one to try and ride it out.  Good luck, and keep us posted.  We all want to see justice served!  ;)  Wrath has no fury like a group of pregnant women! ;)
  • wow, that totally sucks!  Defs call HR right away, and keep a log of inappropriate comments and behavior.  Pregnant women are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

  • I would definitely call HR. Did you get anything about your leave in writing, emails, or anything besides just spoken agreement?

  • I would be on the phone with HR immediately. He is harassing you and not treating you fairly. I wouldn't wait for it to get worse.

  • What a prick!! Glad you're calling HR. Maybe they can reverse his decision about the 6 weeks only statement and give you the 12 instead like you were originally told. Sometimes Dr's get on my nerves with their cocky attitudes they have. Hang in there and hope things work out for you.

  • That guy needs to get a kidney stone and pass it through is (probably) incredibly tiny penis. Some men think being pregnant is so easy.

  • Ok, so first - like everyone else suggested - HR!!

Second, my supervisor (she's a marriage/fam therapist) told me that once my disability was up for the pregnancy (i think its six weeks for regular vag birth), most states will also give an extra 6 weeks for meantal health if you complain to your doctor about postpartum depression. She told me to call her and tell her "I am feeling down and cry often." Maybe check with your state because that would buy you an extra 6 weeks and there is not a damn thing your boss can do about it. He has to hold your job. AND THEN - Call to tell him your not coming back :)

  • HR here...Definitely call your HR department.  Tell them that he is creating a hostile work environment and that you believe it is because you are pregnant.  Make sure you tell them about him calling you "chubby" and "lazy".  That should get them worried.  I'd also keep notes on dates and times and the comments that were made so you can provide them with that information.

As for the amount of time you have off after the baby is born, he is technically correct that they don't have to offer you 12 weeks of FMLA if you have not completed 12 months of work.  But you might also mention to the HR department that he had agreed to more time and now seems to be retaliating against you for requiring accommodation in the form of a reduced work schedule.

Good luck, what he is doing to you is definitely not ok.
