Feeling guilty

I think I am going to ask my doctor at my 36 week appt on Monday to write me down to fewer hours at work.  I have a desk job, but because the people I work with can't pull their weight I can not get away from my desk to have a proper break, and I am so uncomfortable sitting for 8 hrs straight.  I feel like it is too early to cut back hours because I could possibly have 4+ weeks until delivery.  I so planned on working up until I go in to labor, but lately I have no energy from not sleeping at night, and I just can't seem to get the motivation to keep going.  Not to mention deal with the stress of my job. I feel guilty though because this was not my plan at all, and part of me feels like it will be giving up too early.  Not to mention the fact that I wanted to save more money before LO arrived, and cutting back hours will not make that easy.  Any suggestions? Or opinions?

Re: Feeling guilty

  • Cut back your hours. I pretty much told my doctor I thought work was too much at 36 weeks with my first pregnancy. I was dealing with insane swelling issues and being at work was just not working out. luckily my first OB was amazing and took me out of work without a second thought. If there is ANY time to be selfish and take care of what you actually need, it's now! And...you're not asking to be taken out completely, only to work fewer hours. Maybe you need to do half days from here on out?

  • My OB is AMAZING! I asked her to cut my hours at 35 weeks. She didnt even ask any questions and just wrote me a note. Then at 37 weeks I was so swollen and uncomfortable I asked her to take me off and put me on STD, again no questions asked. I did feel like I was giving up too and I felt guilty about it, but now is the time to take care of yourself! Dont feel guilty and enjoy the time before LO comes.
  •  I also have a desk job and my OB said my last day is May 4th.  I have had swelling and she doesnt like the sitting at my desk all day.  I am an admin and when we get busy I dont get a break.

  • If you can swing it financially do it!  Or at least work half days or take a few half days a week.  I have a desk job too and this week my ankles and feet are getting very swollen.  I wish I could do this!  I have been having to work overtime this week and will probably have to through the 2nd week in May since so many people are out and I back them up.  I wish I could just focus on my responsibilities and training my back ups!  I told them today that this job is going to put me into labor.

  • First of all, don't feel guilty!  You are carrying another human inside and as you are near the end, it is taking a toll!!  If you are able to work less hours do that.  I wasn't able to with my nursing job, so ended up starting my maternity leave earlier then planned.  But there was just no way I could cont to work like I was and being 9mo pregnant.  I wasn't getting good rest and there was just so much that I wanted to do and not enough hours in the day! I have to say that leaving work at 36w was the best thing I could have done.  I am sleeping much better.  I have tons less stress to deal with.  I can rest when I want.  Whatever you and doc decide you will make the right decision!  Best of luck to you!!

  • Thanks for the support! I am just hoping that my doctor is understanding.  It all depends on which of the 4 doctors I see on Monday.

  • My dr. took me off two weeks ago because she was concerned with my long travel by myself to/from work (1h 20 mins each way on relatively isolated road w/ no cell service) and swelling.  I actually feel pretty good now, but don't think I would feel nearly as good if I was still on my feet all day and driving.  I can put up my feet when I need to, but still putter around the house and get some things done.  If you need time, take it!
