Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Why am I not losing weight??

I have hit a wall. Unfortunately I didn't have much of a running start.  I have 30 pounds to lose on my tall but (once) slender frame.  I am eating 1500 calories a day, including 3-4 fruits/veggies.  I do cardio exercise 3 days a week, and weights 3 days a week.  I aim to keep my heart rate up for 30 minutes each time I exercise (I would love to do 60 minutes but simply don't have time).  I lost 3 lb. the first month I started working on losing this weight- just the diet part, no exercise. I haven't lost ANY this month.  Is this normal??

Before I was pregnant there were a few times I slimmed down a bit and could do it easy peasy in a couple weeks.  In fact, last year around this time I lost 20 pounds in 2 months.  This is very frustrating for me because I'm a P.E. teacher.  I'm an active, overall very healthy person and value that.  I don't think I'm overweight, but I definitely have some extra jiggle in the thighs and love handles that I want to get rid of.  I don't want to have to squeeze into my bigger jeans anymore! Plus I'd like to think that all this effort is worth it, and I'm not just doing it in vain.

  • Are you BF? I know I am having a hard time losing weight and I am also BF. I've read that sometimes your body will hold onto weight until you wean.

  • 2nd on BF-ing.You need much more than 1500 kcal.

If you don't breast feed, then it's possible that your hormones are a bit out of balance or simply, 1500 kcal is not enough calories (it'd not be for me, for sure!) with your active life style.Your body is probably in starvation mode.

  • I'm not BF- not by choice. DS had some problems that left us unable to BF :(

  • This is probably why (not BF). Try running and eating lean meats, fish and veggies. Really boring but helps you shed the pounds

  • Well, I guess keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat.  It may take awhile to see a difference on a scale.  Go by how your clothes fit.  I understand what you mean about being able to lose weight easier before...I think our bodies are in a different hormonal mode after being pregnant for 9 months and have given birth. Its a lot more difficult for me to lose the weight now also and I am BF.  I guess the only advice I can offer is to make sure to eat protein with each snack, and maybe  divide your calories into three meals and 2 to three snacks a day.   Try to eat them at the same time so that your body burns them quickly. For example, with a 1500 calorie diet you can eat every two hours...8am breakfast 300 calories, 10am snack 200 calories, 12pm lunch 300 calories, 2pm snack 200 calories, 5pm dinner 400 calories, 7pm snack 100 calories??

  • Try to do something different. For example when you run stop and do some jumping jacks or lunges. Then run again.  Or if you walk do a fast walk for about 30 seconds to a minute then slow down. Do this several times during your workout. Don't do it every time just one workout a week. Also when you work out with weights, add  squats or even  lunges to a set or two of arms. Have you tried isometrics? You know the slow leg lifts / kicks. Those can really help with the jiggles.

  • If you haven't already, I highly recommend reading the Abs diet.  I haven't read anything that makes more sense when it comes to loosing weight and it doesn't include counting calories.

I'm 5 pounds below my weight prior to pregnancy.  (however, I am BF) My sister is doing the plan with me and she is the most uneducated person when it comes to nutrition and she's lost 10 pounds so far.

One of the things I like the best is how the workout is designed.  Its quick and really effective.

  • 2 questions:

How long have you been doing this? How much weight have you lost since you had the baby? Were you 30 pounds less before you got pregnant?

    are you drinking enough water?

There is no magic formula but yes, you should be losing weight with what you are doing. Unless you are way underestimating your calories.

I wouldn't jump to do something new because calories in/calories out still works so you need to figure out what's going on.

  • I'm in the same boat but am BFing. I don't count calories though because I'm too exhausted! But I eat really clean, drink a ton of water and workout. I haven't lost a pound in 4 weeks. I am at my pp weight, but I have 15-20 lbs to lose to be at my goal weight, and because I'm short (5'2"), 15-20 lbs is a lot.

I just bought Lindsay Brine's bootcamp and ab video, hoping those help. I like how they are targeted towards moms.

I've been doing the diet part for 8 weeks now, and the exercise added in for two weeks.  Even without exercise, I should be burning something.  I gained 60 lb. with baby (which was quite shocking), and lost 30 in the few weeks after.  But since them I've only lost a few more.  I measure my calories religiously- I'm even measuring and weighing things out to make sure I'm not overestimating my portions.  I DO need to drink more water, that has always been a problem of mine. I've never been a "heavy drinker" :)

  • Give it another week. Times when I started exercising, i didnt lose for a few weeks- building up muscle, etc- then clothes would get bigger, and weight come off.

  • Said the gym rat to the PE teacher...  O.k. it's all well and good that you're doing cardio, that works for some people, but what you're wanting to fix is not going to be fixed by your little textbook cardio routine...  Look at the physique of a sprinter and look at the physique of a long distance runner then look at the physique of a lifter (won't use a bodybuilder for an example because what they do to look the way they do is anything but healthy!).  Heart rate, I hate to say it, pitch watching it out the window unless you're beating at the speed of a canary and need a shock to get back in a rhythm...  As a PP also pointed out, focus on how you look/feel in your clothes, not the pounds on the scale!!

Next, less cardio, more weights!  And no baby weights here!  If the dumbbell is lighter than your baby, it's a good indication it's too light of a resistence for you!  If you want a good butt, do some squatting and deadlifts!!  Again, no baby weights...  Real weight and resistence with good form (i.e. when squatting, hit depth!! i.e. break 90degrees with your hips and knees and avoid sheering your knees off with your stance!)...  Hook up with the powerlifters - they're the scary look'n dudes at the hardcore gym but they know their functional muscles and can help you prevent long term injuries in the process...

Finally, have a thyroid and vitamin panel done...  Thyroid can mess with a whole lot of things in a hurry as can many vitamin deficiencies.  Even if you think you're eating the proper balance doesn't mean you are absorbing them.  I am a "meat with a side of meat" kind of dieter and I still have a D and B12 deficiency which is the ultimate "go figure"...  If your hormones and vitamins are out of balance you're in for an extreme challenge trying to drop pounds.  Also, your distribution of calories might not be where it should be for you at this point in time.  Your hormones completely changed when you had the LO.  What works in the textbook might not be what will work with YOUR body!!!

  • I'm no stranger to the weights, I was an athlete in college and spent a great deal of time in the weight room under strict supervision.  I know what I need to do, how much, and how long.  And I wouldn't mind the weight gain if my pants were fitting better...which they aren't.  Muscle weighs more than fat, and since I'm starting my exercise routine again I may gain weight before losing it buuuut....I should be toning a bit and losing some of the extra trim!

I did wonder about my thyroid.  I have a history of thyroid problems on my mom's side of the family.  But I don't notice any other symptoms, and didn't want to be a hypochondriac about it...maybe I should get it checked just to ease my mind.
