Stinky bed, stinky head

I have a stinky head!  I kept smelling this weird smell on C's head when I'd give him kisses in the morning after he'd wake up.  I finally think I've figured out that he must be slobbering all over his sheets at night (teething so extra slobber) and then his hairless noggin is lying in it all night.  It truly stinks by the AM!  We brush teeth twice/day but clearly that's not enough.  A couple days after changing his sheets, I can pinpoint the smell on his bed to right where his head usually is.  The smell goes all the way through the sheet and the (thin) mattress pad and I can even smell it on the mattress.  I've started changing his sheet and pad every few days now and even tried to clean the mattress.  Does anyone else have this problem or have ideas?

  • How long has it been?  Maybe allergies = post nasal drip = sore throat?  E's breath smells when her throat is sore but haven't noticed on her sheets.

  • You can try lysol fabric spray on the mattress-just make sure it airs out some before LO has to go to bed.

I also layer our crib-matress pad, sheet, mattress pad, sheet, matress pad, sheet.  If O leaks through his diaper I just take the top layer off and the next one is super fresh.

You could also try a matress cover-the plasticy-vinyl kind that zip around the mattress for extra wetness protection.

  • Well, when A's head used to smell weird (he only gets baths once a week still for skin issues), we used to use the Medela cleansing wipes on him. They smell sooo good and freshened him right up!

edit: Mustela, not Medela. Sheesh, why do all baby products have to have such similar names?

  • Occasionally DS2's hair has a funky drool smell in the morning. I end up giving him a bath because the smell gags me. Do you have a mattress protector? We have one that zips over the entire mattress so I only need to change the sheet, wipe down the protector and I usually flip the mattress to let the cleaned side air out.

  • We do have a mattress protector but being paranoid about SIDS when he was little, they are really thin.  So, the stink seems to be just going through.  I'm airing the mattress today and will flip it too.  Jilly, we think just alike.  I'm using the Mustela Physiobebe in the AM to get the smell off of him.  :-)

  • I have never had the problem with K but I read your post to my sister who has 4 kids. She said she had the same problem with her youngest son, almost 3. She said check his nose and make sure nothing is stuck up there.

She went through the same thing with R she would brush his teeth and do baths but couldn't figure out where the stench was coming from so she took him to the pedi to find that he had something stuck up his nose. The smell was coming from his sinus draining. Not saying that this is Cs problem but you never know. My sisters son started sticking stuff up his nose at age 1 1/2 to just recently stopping and everytime he would start smelling she would look in his nose and sure enough there would be a bead or something lodged in there.

Hah, fairykisses.  Your post reminded me that my college roommate had a similar story about her youngest sister.  The pedi determined that she'd stuck a piece of a Grimace sponge up her nose and it was rotting.

Wow, I wouldn't have even thought of that! Okay, I will definitely check that out. Thanks for mentioning!
