Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Blighted ovum -- experience with cytotec?

I was diagnosed last week with a blighted ovum. I had another u/s today that confirmed the sac is actually shrinking (or "crumpling in on itself," as the doctor said).

My doctor said I could choose to miscarry naturally, take cytotec, or have a D&C. I only want to have a D&C unless it's necessary (and she says it's not at this point), so that leaves the natural m/c or the cytotec.

Has anyone had a "decent" experience with cytotec? Everything I've read says cytotec is horrible, and it seems like most people choose to have a D&C from the start. I am still leaning toward starting the cytotec this weekend, assuming I don't start miscarrying before then.

I would have been 8w3d today, if that makes a difference.

Re: Blighted ovum -- experience with cytotec?

  • This is what I posted on an earlier thread:

I found this site when I was decided between taking medication or having a D&C. If you read the comments a lot of women are sharing their experiences with misoprostol/cytotec.  My story is on there too, near the end. https://babyburnham.blogspot.com/2008/12/my-experience-with-cytotec-misoprostol.html

I decided to take misoprostol because a D&C sounded way more traumatic, and I wanted to go through it where I could be comfortable at home with my husband. It wasn't easy, it was actually pretty awful, but I'm glad I did it that way. It helped to reclaim some of my agency over my own body instead of feeling like I was just having something else done to it that I couldn't control.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. It is such a hard thing to hear from the doctor and is truly devastating. I waited two weeks after finding out about my blighted ovum to pass it naturally. I did begin the process naturally but did not pass all the tissue. I used cytotec (4 doses) on my OB's recommendation because I had already begun the process naturally and it would help to move it along. The cytotec caused excruciating cramps but I was prescribed vicodin and I used it. It helped. From what I have heard, cytotec is very hit and miss. It sometimes works, sometimes does not. And it sometimes leads to an incomplete miscarriage that will need a D&C anyway. If I had to do it again, I would do the same thing, only because I am not a fan of medical procedures and did not want to put myself through that. Going through the miscarriage at home was at least comforting, though a painful and disturbing experience I will not soon forget. I wish you the best of luck as you make a difficult decision.

  • After my BO was confirmed, the options presented to me with D&C or wait.  I didn't want a D&C so I decided to wait it out.  After a week of just spotting, I called and asked if my OB would prescribe cytotec (which she did).  I got the script on a Monday, but was planning on taking it on the upcoming Saturday (I couldn't take time off of work).  On Wednesday I started bleeding and by Friday morning was passing small clots.  I tried to go to work Friday and after walking around a store for half an hour I was very uncomfortable and decided to go home.  I took the cytotec (3 pills orally) at 8:45am and took regular tylenol.  The cytotec started working within 2 hours.  By noon the cramps were really bad and I took the 800mg ibuprofen my doctor called in for me.  That really helped.  It was uncomfortable but not unbearable.  This was definitely more painful that my first 2 natural m/c but I was much further along (or should have been much further along).  I continued to pass clots & tissue for 2 days and finally passed the sac on Monday morning.  However, on Friday afternoon I took my 2 children to the golf range (with DH).  Saturday I assisted friends with a photo shoot (on my feet all day).  I was sore but able to do pretty much anything.  I bled for about 9 days total after the m/c started.

Best of luck whatever you decide.  I should add I would have been 12 weeks the day I took the cytotec.  The fetus never developed a heartbeat.  I don't regret my decision to take the Cytotec.  I only regret not asking for it when my options were first presented to me instead of waiting a week.

I am so sorry for your loss.
