at DD's 1 year appt her hemoglobin was 9.5 (11 or 12 is normal). DD eats really well and really healthy and has been on an iron formula. If you have experience with this, what kinds of foods did you find REALLY made the difference? I already feel like she eats an iron rich diet.
Thanks!
Re: anyone's LO have low hemoglobin?
DD1 had it even lower than that at her 9 month visit - hers was around 8 and I was shocked because she ate a great diet. They then tested her iron at my insistence and it turned out that the iron wasn't low after all even though her hemoglobin was low. that scared the crap out of me because it led to a hematology/oncology appt. more testing ended up showing her HGB was slowly rising and was actually fine by 12 months - it went up to over 11 by then. Apparently it's not uncommon for there to be a low # between 9 and 12 months especially where i had an awful delivery and hemorrhaged causing her to get shortchanged on the blood from her umbillical cord after birth - that would have helped her build up her HGB stores.
In the interim between the 9 and 12 month visits, I fed her a ton of red meat (she loves meatballs) and spinach and fortified cereals. I also made sure not to mix certain things which can block iron absorption - if i remember correctly be careful of serving calcium rich foods at the same time as the iron rich foods.
E's was low at the 12 month visit, too. I think it was 10 and they were looking for 11. But her doctor wasn't concerned and said they'd just retest at 18 months. And when they did, it was within normal ranges. I didn't really do anything special to help. We tried the poly.vi.sol drops with iron, but it was a battle to get her to take it, so we usually let it go!
My DS' was low at 18 months and I was told to give him half of a Flintstones vitamin a day. He is a great eater - he even eats spinach - so the vitamin was thought to be our best route.
If possible, try to incorporate ground beef and spinach into meals. I put spinach into our pasta sauces, for example.
