Success after IF

No more swaddle- flailing baby...

I know I don't post much but hopefully you guys would be willing to give me some guidance.  Piper is almost 6 months old (SO crazy!) and her sleeping habits have deteriorated over the past few months to the point that I'm ready to try sleep training her.  I can't bring myself to try ferber yet and pray that I won't have to.  I'm trying the No.cry.sleep.solution.  I started it last night and right now I'm just logging her wake up times and stuff (last night her longest stretch was 2 hours and she woke up 5 times between 8:45p and 4:30a (when I just stayed up with her and held her)).  Thats a pretty bad night for her but becoming more and more common.

Anyway... anyone use this method and how did it go?  How long did it take for you to see results?  I know this is a slower method but I'm willing to deal with that if it means I don't have to hear her scream (I'm such a chicken:P).  I've also decided that now is as good a time as any to let go of the swaddle (do all the changes at once ya know?).  She's been swaddled every night since she was born with the exception of last night.  With this new found freedom she's rolling over in the crib but then doesn't know what to do and starts crying.  I put her down at 7:25p and she's still flailing and rolling around her crib.  I put her down drowsy and crying to go to sleep so I know she's tired.  She's also started mashing her face into the mattress (yay:()   For those of you who quit the swaddle cold turkey... how long did it take for them to stop all the flailing/rolling around? She's not crying or anything but she's rubbing her eyes and so wants to sleep (watching the monitor).

I know I'm in for a rough few weeks but I'm hoping it will be worth it in the end!  Thanks:)

Also, any suggestions for what worked for you would be greatly appreciated!

Re: No more swaddle- flailing baby...

  • We weaned from the swaddle about a week or so before starting sleep training), so we put DS down almost entirely asleep.  We were really only dealing with multiple short wakings as part of a sleep regression, so those weren't an issue while swaddle weaning.   We did do one arm out first and I think that helped.  We had bedtime down within 2 weeks (1 week for swaddle weaning, 1 week for sleep training).  Night wakings were a whole other issue because we tried Mindell's Sleeping through the Night method first and it was a complete fail so we went to Ferber.  I'd say start to finish about 4 weeks for it all.

  • Ferber took us 3-4 days to get her back to just one overnight waking/feeding.   There were occassions when we'd have to "re-ferber" with a new regression, but that never lasted more than 1 or 2 nights.

When we unswaddled (because she started rolling while swaddled), it was about 3 days of awful sleep and naps before she started happily sleeping on her stomach.   we mostly just let her CIO on her tummy (this was 5.5 months) and fall asleep that way - because she needed to figure it out.   Us turning her over wasn't a sustainable solution.

I definitely agree, and haven't gone in to turn her, I'm just wondering how long it took them to figure it out.  She finally fell asleep about 1/2 hour after putting her down and she's on her side.

I'm glad ferber seemed to work so well for you guys.  I keep hearing all good things about it but I couldn't even handle my mom trying to put her down for a nap the other day when she was screaming bloody murder for 10 minutes.

Putting her to bed initially has never been an issue.  It's the night wakings.  They've become more frequent and she's harder and harder to put back to bed.  I'd give anything to go back to the days of 2-3 night feedings with NO trouble putting her back in her crib to sleep.  Now it's 2-3 night feedings with other "just cause" wakings and every time I try to put her back in the crib she is ok initially and then just cries and cries (I did last 5 minutes one night with a pillow over my head:P)  until I pick her up again or put her in her swing.

  • I'd recommend reading Ferber's book even if you don't plan on doing CIO...he has some good advice about phasing out night feedings.

That sounds exactly like Anna before we did Ferber.   It is TOUGH!!!!   Hang in there!   And good luck, no matter what method you choose!

And ditto about Ferber's book.   It is a good resource whether you use his sleep training method or not.

I totally agree. In the end we did use Ferber's method, but I read his book twice before that. It is a great resource for sleep issues in general. P used to be an awful sleeper (sounds similar to what you describe), but now he puts himself to sleep at bedtime and naps and SSTN most nights. There is a light at the end of the tunnel as long as you stick to your method. Good luck hon!

  • A little late - but just another thought.  Could she be teething?  My Little guy is about the same age and a week ago was in the same boat - waking frequently, screaming, etc.  We looked and sure enough he has a tooth breaking through.  I read online that teething hurts more at naptime/night b/c they aren't distracted with play and realizing that "hey - this hurts!"

We started applying teething gel to give him some comfort and it made things much better.

Just pointing it out b/c i didn't think it could happen this quickly.

It's possible but I feel like she's been like this for a while.  She's definitely drooly and has a stuffy nose and is constantly gnawing on things but I've yet to see any actual indications that a tooth is about to pop through when I check her gums.

  • My DS was awful right around 6 months also - waking up almost every hour.  We didn't want to, but finally resorted to Ferber for our own sanity...and it was amazing.

But some other suggestions for the deswaddling that don't involve CIO - we actually would put DS in a sleep sack, but not put his arms through the arm holes, just zip them into the sleep sack.  When he lifted up his arms, he could often get them out of the holes (like if he rolled over and needed to push himself up), but I think he needed something covering them in order to feel secure enough to fall asleep.

Good luck!  This was such a rough time for us with DS.  If you do get desperate enough to try Ferber (that is what it came down to for us), you both need to be on the same page - I needed my DH to keep me strong while hearing my little guy cry.  It was so tough, but after a few days, it was miraculous.
