2nd Trimester

Anyone on progesterone until 12 weeks?

Today is my last day of prog suppositories and I'm really nervous about stopping them.  I don't produce ANY progesterone, which is why we couldn't get pregnant and I didn't even produce eggs without injections.  When does the placenta really begin producing its own prog?  Dr said it's fine to stop (12 wks tomm), but I do have some left...  Thinking...
March 2011: Off Nuva, cycle back to "normal" for me: No periods since 15 years old. June 2011:Provera&50 mg Clomid; Progesterone:0.7 July 2011:Provera&100mg Clomid; Progesterone:3.29 Met with RE:No Clomid response, begin injectables Sep 5 mg Letrozole and Ovidrel in the interim month. Cut out running (was a distance-runner), cycling, eliptical. Restricted to weight-training, walking, pilates. Brain MRI normal. Being physically over-stressed is the reason the body stopped producing prog. Late Sep 2011: Menopur, Ovidrel,& IUI (10.10.11):BFN-Great injectable response: 2 mature, 6 near mature, many smaller; Problem: 9 cysts! Dr: IUI too uncontrolled for number of viable eggs & age. On to IVF! IVF ER 12.6: 37 mature eggs, 27 fertilized, froze all to avoid overstimulation; FET 1.22 (2 Grade 1)=BFN; FET 2.22 (3 Grade 2)=BFP! Beta 10dp3dt=291; 12dp3dt=644; HB 3.26!! 174 bpm: Vanishing twin almost completely absorbed 10wks Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • I was on them until 12 weeks. Trust your doctor they wont do anything thats going to hurt you or the baby! I not sure but I think the placenta starts doing its job around 11 weeks! you should be fine, I was so scared about stopping as well but my dr assured me that my body would do fine with out it! Good luck!

  • I wasnt in the same situation as you, but my dr. told me i would end up having a miscarriage if i didn't take them. (i was very low on prog). She had me stop at 12 weeks and the little bean had grown a lot after 2 weeks. I'm at 21 wks now and our baby girl is growing just fine.

Do you have a dr.appt soon after you stop taking them? If your dr thought you should be taken them longer she probably would have kept you on them longer. imo.

  • My RE said I could stop at 10 weeks, but also said I could wait until my NT scan at 11w3d before stopping.  My OB said it was fine to stop at that point, but I continued until 12 weeks.  The placenta really does take over.  I haven't had any problems.

  • I will be 20 weeks Monday and i still get a progesterone shot once a week. 100mg a week. i use to take 400mg a week. I have had two previous miscarriages tho so that could be why my dr is keeping me on them.

I think that your doctor knows what is best for situation. But i would be nervous too. I'm always worried about something. I think  i stress a lot more than needed.

  • I was also on progesterone (the injections) until 12 weeks as the standard IVF protocol with my RE. The placenta takes over by week 10, so you should be fine. If you are very nervous about it, you can ask to have it checked before stopping, but I'm sure it's fine at this point.

  • I was on the progesterone suppositories until 10 weeks.  I stopped them cold turkey and never had any issues. By 10-12 weeks the placenta takes over making the progesterone and you don't need the supplement anymore.

  • I was on them until 12 weeks also.  I totally understand how you feel.  I was so nervous to stop them, but I'm 25 weeks now and haven't had any problems

Good luck and have faith in your doctor.

  • I was on progesterone until we were able to hear the baby's heartbeat with the doppler (which was 12 weeks for me)!  Everything still going great at 18 weeks!

  • I was on prog supp when I was expecting my first.

The doctor asked me to stop taking it when I was 12 weeks.

LO is a talkative and happy, almost 2 yrs now.

  • I was on progesterone injections until 10w. The only difference I noticed upon stopping was a blissfully pain free a$$. I know it is scary to lose the crutch, but your drs would not do anything they thought would jeopardize your pregnancy.

  • 12 weeks, WOW!!!  If I could be so lucky.  I was told I would have to take them until I am 35-37 weeks.  Currently 17w5d, been on progsterone suppositories since week 4.  I asked to get off since the placenta should start making its own & you know how nasty it is & my insurance won't pay for them...but no such luck.  Dr. didn't explain why just said I needed to keep taking them but has let me go to every other night.

  • With my DS, OB and RE had me stop at 8 weeks because though the placenta is still forming, it has taken over progesterone production from the corpus luteum by then. It sounds like your doc is already being cautious with 12 weeks.

     This exactly! Docs know best!

I had 2 MC's before my 1st son was born and was on them up to 12 weeks with him as well as my 2nd son and this baby girl...placenta took over just fine =) Don't stress but if it will make you feel better to finish them then go ahead, it won't hurt to do so!

  • I was on self injections of progesterone once daily from week 5-12, I too was terrified to stop. We are just over 17 weeks today and all is going well. I also had a few doses left and thought about finishing up even though I had been "cleared" but OB assured me it wouldn't make a difference at that point since the placenta had taken over.
