name pronunciation opinions wanted...

We have decided upon Lionyl nickname "Lio" pronounced LEO.  Would you pronounce name LEONEL or LIONEL?  DH wants to pronounce is Leonel but I like Lionel...even though the nickname will be Leo...confusing I know.

Thoughts/opinions...not looking for "do you like it"...just looking for pronunciation opinions.

Re: name pronunciation opinions wanted...

  • If it were me, I would prefer Lionel (lion-el) as the full name and Lio (pronounced Leo) as the nickname. I don't think it matters much that they don't sound exactly the same.

  • I'd pronounce it Lionel.

  • I'd pronounce it Lion-el.  I think the Leo nn will be fine considering the name sounds like Lion.

  • I would pronounce it Lion-el. I've never heard of the Leon-el pronunciation in English to be honest.

ETA: I think you can definitely pronounce it Lion-el and still use the nn Leo.

  • Lionel will always be trains or a singer to me...and pronounced LION - el or LYNEL.  I don't think it matters which name you choose - his nickname can still be Leo.  I like the look of Lionel....but you're more likely to get the correct pronunciation with Leonel.

  • The way you have it spelled, I'd pronounce it Lio- Nil.

Take that with a grain of salt as I hate crazy spellings in an attempt to make a name "unique".  Why not just spell it Lionel?

  • Of the two I would pronounce it Lionel.  Your spelling makes it look like it should be pronounced Lion-nill.

  • I would pronounce it Ly-nel, not Lion-el. I have an uncle Lionel and that is how we all pronounce his name. I think you can call him whatever nickname you want, Lio/Leo would be fine. If he were introduced as Lio/Leo that's what I would call him, but if you introduced him as Lionyl, I wouldn't ever think to call him Lio/Leo on my own.

This...think about it there are a lot of full names that are totally differnt from the nickname (James--Jim; Henry--Hank; etc).

  • I have never met anyone named leonel, so I think it would be confusing for everyone. I mean every class the poor kid goes to he's going to have to correct the teacher on the pronunciation and that can get really embarrassing for a kid and it's a huge pain. Like my friend Alice who pronounced her name "Elise" or Emile that was pronounced "Amelia." Everywhere they go it's the same "Well actually my name is..."

  • With Lionyl, I would say "Lie-oh-nill".  I love the nn LEO though.

  • I'd pronounce Lionel, and I assume the majority would due to the spelling. Is changing the spelling an option to reflect the "LEO"? I'd think about that if it's going to be an issue. Good luck!

  • I would see it as lie-o-neel. That random Y, to me, is a bigger pronunciation issue than the Leo/Lio issue.

I love the name Leo, is there a reason you are using Lionel instead of just naming him Leo? Coming from someone who has never gone by her real name, I never understood why my parents didn't just name me my nickname (which is not a shortened version of my first name so it's all that more confusing...)

  • I would pronounce it Lionel. For Lio, my first instinct was to say Lie-oh though instead of Leo.
