My DD is 6 months and EBF, but due to start intro to solids sometime soon. We haven't CDed yet, but I'm quite intrigued and hopeful at the prospect. I'd love and appreciate some veteran advice on my couple of questions and hang-ups...
1) At this EBF (about to be transition) stage, would liners - Bummis? - be helpful or no? I have ZERO problem cleaning/coming into contact with my baby's poop. I have a HUGE problem coming into intimate contact with my toilet. So the thing is, if I can't completely avoid dunking/spraying/playing in my toilet, then I won't be CDing :-(
2) Assuming the liner thing works out and catches most of the poop, what kind of cloth wipes do you use? And then do you spray/dunk/swish/whatever them, too? Or they just go into the wash?
Which brings me to my next question:
3) How sanitary is it really to even put poop remnants in the washing machine if you can't use your bacteria-killing sanitize cycle? Even if you get the chunks off and are just putting "track" marks in the wash, that's serious bacteria swishing in there in just regular old hot water...no? I must be missing something...Does anyone regularly bleach their machine? (My mom is so grossed out by this exact part of CDing and she's the one I need to convert! She watches my DD on the 2 days that I work. Help! :-))
4) Also, thoughts on Bac-out? I'm confused about not buying a detergent with "enzymes" for the diapers, but then many people use the enzyme-cleaner Bac-out? That's weird, right? Lol. Do you just spray that on your poopy-tracked dipes and then throw them in the wash?
5) As long as I can work out these washing kinks, I want to go the pre fold/cover route. At 6 months and about 16 lbs, what cover would you recommend? With my newbie knowledge, I was favoring the Thirties Duo Snap or the Blueberry Coveralls.
My family thinks I'm crazy for considering cloth. I really need to convince myself before I can convince them! The research phase is no joke. I'm hoping that's the most difficult part! Thanks so much for any answers anyone can give to one or all of my questions!
Re: Sitting right on the fence.
1) You COULD use liners, but I'm not a fan of them myself. You wouldn't have to come in contact with your toilet to use a diaper sprayer or to plop poop in the toilet once your DD is more established on solids. Based on your post, I'm assuming you have the idea that there's a lot of dunking and soaking involved in CDing...there's not. It really isn't necessary.
2) I LOVE Thirsties Fab wipes. I've also used Fuzzibunz wipes, but they're not quite as awesome. A lot of people make their own.
3) I don't bleach my machine. My machine isn't dirty. I use CD detergent, which actually cleans really well even without all the additives.
4) Bac-Out is great! I mostly use it on mama cloth, but it works well on CDs too.
5) I'd recommend Flip covers. I'm not a huge fan of Thirsties Duo covers and I've never used Blueberry coveralls. Flip covers aren't too expensive, and they're fantastic. If you wanted a cheap option other than prefolds, Flip stay dry inserts are really nifty.

i can answer some of these
1- i have only dunked/swished in the toilet ONCE. and it was an emergency, lol. but i started a little later in the game when DD became allergic to disposables (7 months?) so the poo wasn't so bad since she had started solids already. i always just plop it into the toilet and move on!
2- when i actually use cloth wipes, i plop what i can into the toilet, and the rest goes into the wash. the rinse cycle takes care of most of it... trust me i've checked a million times!
3- seriously, the rinse cycle does a great job. hot water and detergent do the rest! they smell clean when they're done, so that means the washer is clean and smells clean too
5- yes i like the thirsties covers too!
Just to add to PPs-
I think using disposable liners all the time is silly. It's one more thing to buy and dispose of, which is kind of missing the point of CDing IMO.
To clarify, you're ok with poop as long as you don't put it in your toilet or washer? Unfortunately, your LO will get all kinds of bodily fluids on his/her and your clothes. Poop will end up in your washer. It will get cleaned off and everything will be ok.
I use Target's Circo brand baby washcloths as wipes. Inexpensive and work great. They go straight into the wet bag, unless theres a big chunk of poop to plop in the toilet.
Bac-out is great.
I use Flip covers and Blueberry coveralls. Love them both. I don't like Thirsties as much as other people do- the quality doesn't seem as good.
It is not as gross as it may seem. This is what everyone did before sposies came around. Except modem CDs are a lot nicer than what your grandmother used. GL!
Instead of spraying the diapers in the toilet, I spray the diapers into a small plastic trashcan I got at walmart for $1.97. Something like this:
Then I dump the water into the toilet. No toilet contact. However, I use the trashcan to help contain the overspray mist.
My washer doesn't even have a "Sanitize" cycle. I am completely confident that my CDs, clothes, towels, and bedding are all clean once they are washed.
Soap+water=clean.
If it really bugs you, then use liners. Hopefully it will become easier for you once you get started. It really is NBD, I promise.
This completely. I trust that the washer and detergent Im using are cleaning my laundry. If not I would go crazy. My clothes smell refreshed and clean when they are washed. I'm good with this. Cloth diapers make me happy.
This may be an unpopular opinion here- but, if you're that opposed to poop in your washing machine and spraying, perhaps cloth diapering is not for you. I've never used liners, but I do use prefolds, and poop can get everywhere! I have a hard time believing that a liner would catch all of it.
To answer your other questions:
We have some wipes from GMD that I really like, I think they're terry on one side and velour on the other. Plain washcloths would work just as well. When I'm done using, I just throw in our diaper pail. Not sure what we'll do when we start solids. Probably spray the really dirty wipes.
My washer doesn't have a sanitize cycle. I really don't worry about fecal matter in my washer. My family has never gotten sick from CDing.
I like the thirsties duo wraps, you would probably start with a size 2. I also really like the bummis wraps.
Just saw this... and wanted to let you know I am in your boat!! I was raised to NOT touch the toilet or mess with it...so swishing is the grossest thing my family and I have ever heard of. My mom CDed us too. Anyways, I use the liners and I also use a spray bottle to spray it sometimes. I think the sprayer that you attach to the toilet would make my life easier but knowing me, I'd probably avoid using it because it's place is next to the toilet LOL.
Anyways, I just wanted to say liners and a spray bottles have worked well for us, DD is 16 months and NONE of our diapers have a stain!!! I soak them in a bucket of water after they are soiled and then transfer to the washer which helps with the staining and residual poop I guess! HTH!
