Quick Flying Question (for BFing mamas)

Hi Ladies!

Has anyone flown with frozen breast milk? We are going to Florida with my in-laws and I would love to bring a bit of my stash so DH and I can go out for a night, but I think I would CRY if my milk got taken away at the airport, ha ha. I'm pretty sure it's fine but would love to hear a first-hand experience with this.

TIA!!

  • I've flown with a bottle of BM before but it was only one.  I'm sure as long as it's a reasonable amount of BM it shouldn't be a problem.  All they did when I went through security is take it out and test it.

While you can fly with breast milk, no problem, I'm not sure if it will be logistically possible to keep frozen BM frozen all the way there until you get to a freezer. And since it's only good for 24 hours once thawed, do you think that time frame would work?

It might almost be easier to just bring your pump and squeeze in a session or 2 before you wanted to go out.

This.  When I traveled for work, I made sure my BM stayed cold but not frozen for this reason.

  • I haven't flown with BM yet, but as a native of NM I bring back red and green chile when I visit, and it is policy that as long as it is frozen when you go through security it is okay.

  • I ended up calling the airline and they said it is fine. Just in case anyone is interested, she said to use a bag of frozen peas to pack around it as the frozen gel packs or ice packs are not allowed on the plane. I have driven 3+ hours with the milk in an insulated lunch bag and it was still completely frozen upon arrival.

I don't have an overabundance of milk so I can only really pump 2-4 oz a day, and if hubby and I are able to go away for a night then that wouldn't be enough. : )

  • I just flew to Dallas for work and brought my frozen pumped milk on the return flight home. I had it in an insulated carrier with frozen ice packs. I just put the carrier in the tray to go through security. They didn't even ask me to open it, just tested my hands.
