Im confused..(bottle/sippy cup)

So i have been reading all these different things about how when they are a year they need to be using a sippy cup and no more bottles, including a night time bottle. Well ive bought about 4 different types of sippy cups and weston doesnt seem to care for any of them. Then I was reading about how they should be weaned off a night time bottle by 12 months... weston loves his night time bottle lol

so my question..is it true at 12 months they should not be using a bottle and only a sippy cup?

and also should i begin to start weaning him off a nightime bottle?

Re: Im confused..(bottle/sippy cup)

  • At our 9 month appointment our pedi told us to start weaning off bottles because by 12 months she didn't want us to use them anymore.

She didn't say anything about the nighttime bottle/nurse session so I don't know about that.

  • Our Pedi told us at our 9 month appointment that he recommends they be weaned by 12-15 months.  I believe you have some wiggle room.  I would think when you wean they mean all bottles.  I would assume though if you get the day ones down first it should be easier to switch the night time one.  Becaue eventually our LO's will probably not want a bottle at bedtime, but rather dinnertime.

    Good Luck!

  • Our Pedi told us to ween Em off for 18 months.  Most of the one year olds at DC still have a bottle.

  • I wrote a long post in response to MrsPBNJ's tooth decay post from yesterday on why you want to switch over to a sippy cup at 12-14 months from a dental perspective (as well as eliminating feedings before sleep). I can't link it from my phone but check out the post! Also have you tried a straw sippy? My LO still can't do a regular sippy very well but she's been able to do the straw for a few months.

Exactly this!  Bottles are bad for teeth my pedi said.  Also if it is true about the nighttime bottle it should not be a prob soon as our babies start decreasing their milk intake.

  • At our 9 month I was also told to start weaning from the bottle at 12-14 months.  Also, at that point to start working in WCM.  The pedi didn't say anything about nighttime feedings though, but I assumed it was the same - wean from the bottle!  However the tooth decay post has me wanting to wean off that feeding, to avoid tooth decay, as terrifying as dropping it sounds!

My initial plan to wean/introduce WCM was to work on building the sippy/straw cup skill with water, then start doing ratios of formula/milk... but now I'm thinking that I'll start introducing small amounts of just WCM in sippies at 12 months, increasing those, while phasing out bottles.

However, right now Ty's either going through a GS or is just loving the bottle because he at 35 oz of formula on Monday, 37 on Tuesday and 35 yesterday.

  • My plan is to start at 1 and hopefully be done by 14 months at the latest.  I plan to switch out one bottle a day for a sippy of WCM.  If she tolerates it well we'll switch another.  If not we may mix milk and formula for a bit, not sure yet.
