how accurate are fetal ultrasounds?

I know that ultrasound is not the best estimator for baby's size, but does anybody have any stories about that?  I had an ultrasound today and they estimated that LO is going to be around 9 pounds so now I'm wondering how far off can those estimates be?  If the standard deviation is a pound or more ... am I going to have a 10 pound baby or 10+ pounds?!   eep.

  • my friends u/s was off by 2lbs they estimated higher

  • My friend was told 9-10lbs at birth based on several u/s and her daughter was born 7lbs 13oz just a few days shy of her EDD.

Her OB thinks the measurements were off because her daughter was very long (21in) and breech

  • mine was accurate with DS.  At 36w 5d he was 7.5 lbs and i delivered at 39w 1 d and he was 8lb 14oz.

  • At 32 weeks it's unlikely that baby is 9lbs, unless you have severly uncontrolled gestational diabetes?  Perhaps you heard wrong?

I have heard ultrasounds are off by usually around +/- 2lbs close to birth.

  • No, sorry for the confusion.  She only weighs 4lb13oz as of today, but they are estimating that she will be 9 lb at term.  I really want to have a natural child birth so it sounds intimidating.... although I've been told that the size of the baby doesn't really matter so much.

  • Those are estimates that can be off 1-2 lbs either way.  Having a large baby doesn't mean you can't have a natural childbirth.  It just means the baby is big.  Many women have big babies naturally with no issues.

  • They estimated my cousin?s baby to be around 9 bounds at 38 weeks so they induced her he was 6.5.

  • My son was estimated at 5lb10oz at my 36w scan and was born 2 weeks later weighing 5lb5oz.  They should gain about .5 lb/week the last few weeks which means the scan was likely high by over a pound.

  • At 31 wks thy are estimating baby at 5lbs. Baby is still breech and I feel that it's long just based on the simultaneous kicks and pushes.

I don't blame on letting him induce me or schedule a c section based on the babies size. Sonos can be wrong and feel that it's better for the bay to stay in there as long as they need too.

Remember your body will stretch and the baby's head will too. Don't give up on yourself.

  • they estimated my daughter at 7lbs 13 oz but she was 8 lbs even.  I guess thats close.
  • I haven't had mine measured yet but based off of my friends who already gave birth it seems like the ultrasound is off by a couple of pounds and the baby comes out lighter than the ultrasound says.
