Infertility

intro....IVF failure mentioned....question for multi IVFers...

Hi everyone...

I occasionally post over at TTTC, but wanted to introduce here since I have been lurking.

I'm currently in the wake of my first IVF failure.  Protocol included BCP for 3 weeks, Follistim/Menopur, Cetrotide...with an HCG trigger.  Did a 3dt, two 8 cell embryos.  After progesterone supp in am, oil injects in the evening, baby aspirin and vivelle patches.  First beta was 37.4, got the call yesterday that it did not go up and to stop all medications. I am crushed, but also realistic.  What's making me feel better, is looking toward the next cycle.

I was curious, for those who have done multiple IVFs, how long did you have to wait between cycles?  We didn't have any to freeze.  I know I have to wait for my HCG to return to <1.  Also, did any of you try acupuncture the second time?  I'm looking into that and doing some yoga.

Thank you for taking time and reading this.  I have learned alot by lurking here.

Re: intro....IVF failure mentioned....question for multi IVFers...

  • Welcome Niki64. Your first cycle sounds similar to mine. I am sorry it went the way it did. I know how crushing it is to be so close yet so far with a chemical pregnancy.

I think most clinics want you to wait until you have at least one menstrual cycle before letting you cycle again, which is what I did. I also did acupuncture and organic eating for my second cycle. Good luck to you!

  • I am so sorry to hear this! Wishing you lots of luck on your upcoming cycle.

Some clinics have you wait three cycles or three bleeds before trying again. My RE wanted to make sure I was emotionally ready to move on and that i properly grieved my loss. I had a d+c in May and was back on the horse in July. ET was 8/3. I would talk to your RE and see when they will "allow" you to cycle again and then decide if you are ready for it. GL and I am so sorry!

  • My first IVF also ended in a chemical pregnancy. We luckily had frozen embryos, and were able to cycle right away, so I can't answer your question about when you can cycle. Although I do recommend making sure you are emotionally prepared to try again. Our FET also ended in chemical pregnancy and I was a mess, since I never really took time to process our first loss. We took a 5 month break after that.

I did go back to acupuncture with this most recent FET. I had been going with all my IUIs, but stopped before IVF. My RE actually told me to go back, and I honestly think it helped me a lot to deal with all the crazy emotional crap that goes along with IVF/FET. My acupuncturist specializes in fertility (in particular IVF cycles) so it has been really wonderful. I highly recommend it!!

    Best of luck, and welcome!

  • Welcome! Sorry to hear how your cycle ended. My first cycle was similar except I had to have methotrexate to make my betas go down. I was on a forced break for 3 months after that to do my FET. After my FET BFN, I started the pill that week and went right into my next IVF cycle. It sounds like every clinic is different as far as what they recommend. Honestly, If it were me, i'd take at least a month off, but that's just my personal opinion.

As far as acupuncture- I did it with two of my cycles. I really enjoyed it as it was extremely relaxing for me. I felt like it really helped me emotionally and physically. Good luck to you! Hope your next cycle brings you success!

  • Welcome and I'm sorry for your loss.

I always had to wait for one full cycle. So, once your hcg returns to <1, you'll have one bleed and then should be able to start. That having been said, it all depends on your doctor's preference. Good luck to you! I just completed my 2nd IVF. It really sucks to have to go through it at all, let alone more than once :(

  • Hello, and welcome.

My RE told me to wait one full cycle to start again. So my cycle failed in febuary, got my period in March, and started BCP's and Lupron in April. Now I am looking at my ER and ET being sometime in May. As for what I did different from the last cycle to this one; My first cycle was very similar to yours. I ended up having very poor egg quality, and my eggs took alot longer to mature than they thought they would. We ended up transferring 3 average quality embroyos on day 5 that looked like they could of been day 4 and got a BFN. This time around, I am taking a bunch of supplements and I am also going to acupuncture twice a week until ET and then twice the day of ET. So far this cycle is 100% different from my last cycle, but the doctor did change our protocol alot this time around to try to deal with my crappy eggs. GL to you!

TTC 6 years three m/c during that time 5/11 Ruptured Ectopic - Lost left tube and a normal baby boy 2/12 IVF #1 BFN - Very poor egg quality... :( 5/12 IVF #2 Hoping for the best! Est ET 5/11-5/18 BFN Decided to move on to adoption to complete our family!
  • Thank you everyone for your welcome and responses!  I called a few acupuncture places, ordered "Fully Fertile" (Pulling Down the Moon is associated with my clinic), and contacted the financial department of my clinic to see where we stand.  Planning seems to be my best coping mechanism.

  • Our first IVF also resulted in a chemical pregnancy this past January.  Have you had your WTF appointment yet?  I think my RE would have been fine with us attempting again after one cycle, but after our WTF appointment we decided to do some additional testing.  I just had a hysteroscopy done a few days ago, and I think we will start IVF #2 after my next period.

I see you mentioned Pulling Down the Moon.... are you by chance in Chicago?

I did acupuncture throughout IVF #1 and probably will for #2 as well.  If nothing else, it is huge for stress relief, and did wonders for me mentally.  I go to a place called PCOM, which is a school for training acupuncturists.  I think they do great, and it saves a ton of money.  Im not sure how I would afford it otherwise.

Good luck!  I feel your pain.

  • Iguana33 - I'm sorry for your loss too.... This just sucks.  I have my appointment Tuesday.  I feel like it can't come fast enough.  I just have a lot of questions and hopeful that my RE has a new plan (and that she is still optimistic).  I live about an hour and 15 from Chicago.  If I worked with Pulling Down the Moon I would probably go to Naperville (it's like 45 min from me).  I like that they are located in the same building where my ER/ET are done (seems convenient).  I would just like the stress relief....especially after this first failure.  I will probably be more anxious the next time around.
