Baby Names

Charlie vs. Charley

Long time lurker here.  I?m 26 weeks pregnant with a boy, Charles Arthur.  We plan on calling him both Charles and Charlie.

Ever since we decided on a name, I?ve been hearing the name Charley (nn for Charlotte) for a girl everywhere.  It?s probably one of those cases where once you notice something, it becomes more noticeable.  I can?t stand the name Charley for a girl, esp now since how it will be our son?s name.

My question ? how many girl Charleys have you come across, and do you think it?s growing in popularity as a girl name as opposed to a classic boy name?  We will be naming our son Charles regardless, it just makes me heated that Charley is now added to the ?classic boy but now how cool! It can be a girls name!? list.

Re: Charlie vs. Charley

  • I know three Charlotte's. One goes by Charlie (5 yrs old), one by Charlie (pronounces shar-lee) (24 yrs old), and one goes by Charlotte (30 something).

I'm a teacher, and none of my students have come through with that name. I do teach middle school though, so since it's a new trend I probably haven't gotten those kids yet.

Charlie still sounds weird to me for a girl... definitely should just be a boy's name IMO.

I do know one Charlotte born about a month ago who they are calling "Charley" and I know a few other Charlotte's who go by their full name.

I also know one girl "Charley" and that her given name Tongue Tied

  • There are a lot of Charlottes out there (#45 in 2010 and rising fast), and a lot of them go by Charley/Charlie. I personally know 2 under age 4, but there are thousands.

I don't really think this is an example of girls stealing a boys' name, though. Charlotte is a feminine form of Charles and Charlie is the diminutive for both, just as George and Georgia could both go by Georgie.

  • I don't know any in real life. I only know of the TV show "Good Luck Charlie" where the baby is a girl.

I like Charles and Charlie for a boy.

  • The only Charley (full name Charlotte) I've known was in her 20's.

I wouldn't really worry about your son sharing a nickname with some girls. Charlie in general is growing in popularity (not to any extremes, but it's definitely out there). It's not devestating to share your nickname with someone of the opposite sex. If he (or you) hates it that much, he can go by Charles.

  • I don't know any Charlottes... and certainly no girls named Charley. IMO it's an awful nn for a pretty name.

I agree with alliejo (PP) I wouldn't worry too much!

  • I don't know of any girl Charleys/Charlies.  I think it is still boy IMO.

  • I only know of one Charlotte who is goes by Charlie occasionally, and she is 5 or 6 I think. I hate boy names on girls as much (possibly more) than the next person, but I don't mind Charlie as a nn for Charlotte. I group it in the same category as Alexandras and Samanthas who go by Alex and Sam.

Now, Charlie/Charlee/Charli/Charley as a full first name on girls? HATE.

  • I feel your pain; people are using Rory for a girl name.  Which it is not.

I don't think Charlie/Charley is a natural nn for Charlotte.  I think it's really reaching.  But it's perfect and appropriate for a Charles.

  • I am usually ok with unisex names and cross over names. Somehow I can not get used to the idea of Charlie on a girl. To me it would be like Bruce or Gregory or the like on a girl.

  • Excellent name choice!  We have gotten nothing but compliments on our boy's name.  We mostly call him Charles, but I and some close friends and family call him Charlie sometimes.  That is definitely the masculine spelling of Charlie.. Charley looks very girly to me.

I have met one or two little girls around C's age who are called Charley/Charlie.  Not sure if their given names are Charlotte or not.  We also know of a couple of little boys.. definitely more boys than girls.. but still not a huge number.  I'm pretty confident he'll be the only Charles in his class.. or maybe one of two.  Not like Aiden/Ayden, etc

Yes, it bugs the heck out of me, but there are far more people who think of this as a boy's name, not a girls.  It's a fad that will fade, I hope.

    Good naming job, mama!

We have a Charles also. It's funny, as traditional of a name as he has, I haven't come across many that share his name, and it's pretty much impossible to find soemthing with his name on it (a good, if sometimes frustrating, sign).

I know a girl Charlie that's 3 weeks older than he is.  It doesn't bother me.  My boy is a boy.  What other people name their children doesn't change that.

  • My DD is Charlotte NN Charlie.  It suits her perfectly but we interchange the two.  If she wants to be Charlotte later down the line, fine by me!  I am a teacher and have had a lot of Charlies recently but they are all adorable and all boys.
