NBR: Teen banned from prom for Confederate flag dress

Has anybody seen this?  I saw it on PC&E and thought I'd post it over here to liven the board up.

Thoughts?

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - A high school senior from West Tennessee says she was turned away from her prom because of her dress, which had elements of the Confederate battle flag.

Texanna Edwards told The Jackson Sun officials of Gibson County High School told her the dress was "offensive and inappropriate" when she and her date arrived for the dance on Saturday. She was not allowed to attend.

The dress is red and has crossed blue bands that contain rows of white stars.

Gibson County Special School District Superintendent Eddie Pruett said a teacher cautioned the 18-year-old Edwards two months ago that the dress might not be acceptable.

Pruett said there have been racial issues at the school in recent years and Principal James Hughes felt the dress could have caused more.

Re: NBR: Teen banned from prom for Confederate flag dress

  • I think she should not have worn it.  If they warned her that it may not be acceptable she shouldn't have worn it.  I think unfortunately there is racial thoughts attached to the rebel flag, when ultimately most people don't even know waht the confederate flag means.

My point just being, the dress looks rediculous in the first place, and whether it was this dress or a dress that shows to much skin, if a school believes it will cause a problem then the students should obey the rules.

  • Well my first issue is that her name is Texanna.  Really parents?

This is a tricky issue because it is school related, but not necessarily education related. There are a lot of Supreme Court cases dealing with a student's right to free expression (through clothing, signs, gestures).   I think the school has the right to ban a student in order to "keep the peace."   This reminds me of a law school exam. LOL!

  • I think the school did the right thing. There's no reason to wear a dress like that unless you're trying to make a statement. And there's no good statement associated with that dress....whether fashion related, value related, or racism related, etc.

  • first- the dress is ugly... seriously?

second- the fact that the school is saying that they warned her that it might not be appropriate 2 months ago tells me that this was not just "a dress". if attire with the flag is banned in the handbook ect then i think the school is entirely in the right.

and Texanna? is this really a name? SMH....

  • Good.  Wake up and join the reality of the rest of the country dumb girl.  Sorry, but this just really angers me.  How ignorant.
  • It wasn't in this article but in another one I think it said they have worn confederate flag things to school before and not been banned, kicked out, asked to take it off etc.

If that is truly the case I think it's a little hypocritical that she got kicked out of prom for wearing it.

Not at all that I am advocating her wearing the dress... it's trashy and shouldn't be allowed but I think they need to change their dress code then.

And yeah... Texanna is just, Wow.

  • As a teacher, I completely side with the school.  As long as their dress code specifies what most do "clothes that are offensive to other students or staff, or cause disruption may not be worn".  We send kids home all the time for messages their clothes send to others.

ETA:  This is NOT a freedom of speech case at all, just like your place of work has a dress code and you would be asked to leave if you violated your company's dress code (or fired), a school has a dress code too.

    This. It lacks taste IMHO.

Yep, I agree with this.  We had an issue w/confederate flags where I used to teach.  Kids would have them on their agenda books, etc.  We had the legal right to ask them not to wear clothes w/the flag and to take it off their agendas just like we have the right not ask them not to wear clothes with pot leaves on them.  Don't even get me started on some of the ignorant things I've heard kids (in Indiana, of all places) say re: "The South will rise again." Super Angry

She has the legal right to wear that dress out in public.  She does not have the legal right to wear it to a school function, especially if she's been warned otherwise.

  • I am not a fan of the confederate flag but I will say this.

If she could wear the flag to school on a normal day but then there is an issue with it on prom day that is a doubble standard.  Either it is allowed or it isn't.  You can't pick and choose the event.

Make a dress code and stick to it.

Legally she can wear what the hell ever she wants outside of shchool but at a school sponsored event she has to follow dress code.

Personally I can't understand why someone would wear that ugly dress to prom. It would have been equally ugly if it had stars and stripes from the modern day US flag.

Exactly. Plus, where I used to teach, prom was actually a private function, hosted by the junior class rather than the school, so if that is the case, she has even less of a leg to stand on. Just like I could toss someone wearing something like that from a party at my home, the hosts can toss her from the prom.

  • I agree with the tackiness of the dress and her name.  I also agree she shouldn't have been allowed in.

The only thing I can add that I didn't see anyone else mention is WHO THE HELL WEARS FLIP FLOPS TO PROM?!?!?!

Um, and her crappy flip flops don't even match her dress. I mean, black and pink with the starts and bars. Way to make something tacky even more so.
