trouble falling asleep

Up until last week, DD was able to fall asleep on her own, no problem.  We have a bedtime routine that hasn't changed, which ends with me nursing DD and then putting her in her crib.  This last week she has started crying as soon as I put her down, and nothing will soothe her except for me nursing her to sleep.  If I put her down slightly still awake, she wakes up completely.  It's been taking me over an hour, plus going into her room several times, to finally get her to sleep.  What am I doing wrong?  Is this going to pass, or am I creating bad bedtime habits?

Re: trouble falling asleep

  • Are you comfortable letting her cry just a bit? Ada often does a bit of "protest" crying when I first put her down at night. Never lasts more than 5-10 minutes and even then it will be off and on, not solid crying for that long.

Sometimes they're too tired to sleep!

You could also try changing the bedtime routine so you don't nurse her before sleep - do a bath/book/song routine or something else. It might take a little while for her to get used to going to bed awake but she should get the hang of it.

I always start sleep change things (like unswaddling, moving to the crib, etc) with naps, so maybe try starting there by not nursing her to sleep for naps, then transition that to bed time?

Yes, and the last 2 nights I gave her 5 minutes to see if she would calm down, and it only made it worse.  Once she starts crying, she can't stop.

I like the idea of not nursing at all for bedtime.  I could nurse, do bath, jammies, book and then rock.

  • idk but I am right there with you; LO has sttn for months and taken great naps, and now over the last few days, she won't nap, and keeps waking up at night and early in the morning.

I am hoping it's just a phase; I have no advice, just some good old commiseration.

  • We are having the same issue.  I thought it was because she was sick, but now she is better and still doing it.  It has taken at least an hour if not more every night this week.  Good luck.

This has been us lately! Tonight it took me five times before he finally would my down. When he starts crying he ends up rolling over to his back and he hates that!

  • I know that for our LO when he is going through a developmental phase he will have a related phase of having a harder time sleeping, or being more needy throughout the day.  I just learned about this a month ago and it's common with babies- and I definitely see a correlation when he is learning new hand-eye coordination or rolling, etc, he will become a bit fussier.  It's hard work being a baby:).  It could also be separation anxiety- I put one of my t-shirts near the crib that I had worn all day and I swear it worked!! I think it made him feel comforted to think I was nearby.
