SAHM for how long??

I was wondering this today... As a ftm mom for DH and I it was easy to make this decision. Our goal is for me to return to school when DD goes to preschool... And then enter the workforce... At that point we might reverse roles and DH might stay home... Not written in stone just yet though.

So my question.... How long are you planning to be a stay at home mom? Until preschool? Kinder? High school? Forever and just be a homemaker?  And why if you don't mind me asking :)

Re: SAHM for how long??

  • I truly never want to work again. I hated working so, so much. We also aren't sure what we are doing with DD yet when it comes to school, we may do cyber or home school, in which case I'd have to stay home.

DH got his master's in January, so it seems like the easy choice that he'd work. I would love to coach swimming, and would do that as a part time thing when DD is older. But I don't ever want to have to go back to the 9-5 thing ever again. Probably a lot of this also depends on whether we decide to have more kids. I am about 50-50 right now.

  • I don't ever intend to go back to work unless our financial position were to change drastically.  For us, we live comfortably on DH's salary and put a good amount away each month.  I think my time would be better spent volunteering at the kids' schools, our church, and other local organizations.

I can't bold... But all the last part sounds like a great idea. I had totally forgotten about being more active in their growing little lives... We also live comfortably but since DH has worked for many years and I want to be a nurse I think the plan might suit us well. He'd be a soccer dad ;) or I could always work part time (kids school hrs or less) and still be very active .

  • I have been tossing this around in my head. I think that after our youngest starts school full-time, I will probably get a part time job. And then possible full time job when they start high school.

Or I might really enjoy life and continue being a homemaker :)

I vote you have another ;)  being a swim coach sounds fun!

now- your last sentence sounds good too! Lol so many things to think about.. If we have another baby soon then our plans for me to return to school will get pushed back, it's such a juggling act trying to finish/accomplish things.

  • Our plan was for me to SAH for his first year, then see how we felt. Truthfully being home has been hard for me. If we have another soon, I will stay home while pregnant but hope to at least get a part-time job after new baby. If we don't become pregnant by the new year, I will look for a job.

I was at home for nine months and I loved it...but frankly, I am so happy to be back at work again. It helped that my leave was paid and now my husband is at home with our little man. But frankly, I need to get out of the house, back into my "other" role as career person and enjoy going to the bathroom alone.

  • Until our youngest starts kindergarten, then I will go back part-time.

I could have written much of this myself! I haaaaaaaated my job. I definitely never want to go back to a 9-5 kind of desk job again. I am going to be transitioning into being a photographer, but just when I get around to it. For sure by the time DD gets into school. And we do want another LO ASAP, so there will be that to contend with too.

  • I'd love to pick up some regular, out of the house hours when S turns 1. There are really good opportunities in my field to do short, interesting projects so it wouldn't be a big thing for me to work a couple of days a week for a year and then drop back to just work from home stuff for another year - rinse and repeat.

I don't have it in me to be a long-term SAHM. Bless 'em all, but I don't think that I could do it.

EDIT: DH is going to start test prep for his professional engineer cert soon and get back to grad school. That will allow him to possibly do consulting work / some work from home. If he could go part time with that, I would find a traditional job (with benefits) and he could be primary on daily care (with a little daycare). He's LOVE that and I think that he'd be a much better / happier SAHM than me.
