help, she won't take a pacifier!

My 6 week old DD doesn't seem to like the pacifier but I think she needs one to calm down. Any suggestions?

We've tried the NAM, Tommee Tippee and the Soothers kind so far. She takes it, then takes a suck or two then makes a face like it tastes bad, gags and spits it out.

No suggestions, but my DS never attached to one either. By 2 weeks old we noticed he'd only keep it in his mouth longer than a few seconds if he was actually really hungry. We found out at 5 weeks old he had reflux, that's why he was crying most of the other times. By then, he was over the pacifier and we just threw them all away. We figured there was no need to continue pushing it. He's 2 1/2 now and I'm really glad now he never liked them!

Ditto - DD never liked them, so we didn't force it. One less habit to break.

Same here - Alana hated the pacifier. Even in the hospital the nurses would comment on it. My pedi did encourage me to keep trying because of the link to a decreased risk of SIDS, but, acknowledged that not all babies like them. I didn't torture her or me.

Sorry to continue the trend but my #2 never took one either. If he was upset and I stuck it in and he would get even more mad. Never took one. I never understood parents who said their kid hated a paci, what's not to like about a paci? But then my kid came along, changed everything. When he was upset I just hugged him close in a breast feeding type pose and bounced/rocked until I he passed out. Nothing else I could do.

This is us as well. G would get super ticked if you stuck a pacifier in his mouth. I don't get it! He's 6 months and I tried giving him one last week and he took one suck, made a face, and spit it out. He did suck on the other side for awhile.

Sounds exactly like Lydia. I did not force it & around that age, she found her thumb. Eliza, on the other hand, is a binky addict.

Piper always acted like I was trying to poison her with the binky and made the funniest disgusted faces. DH and I were kind of happy that she wouldn't take it since it was something we wouldn't have to break later.

We did keep trying when she just wouldn't calm down and sometimes it would p!ss her off more but now she's ok with it. I just wanted something for car rides when I couldn't hold her. Now she only uses it for a little bit and then spits it out but it does help her sometimes.

If you realllly want her to try one you could keep trying it with her and then maybe over time she'd start to take it more? Piper would only take the soothie kind then but now she uses the avent ones too.

I second the breastfeeding hold...That was really the only thing that would calm DD down when she was that young.

Dillon never took one past 2 months. I just figured out other ways to soothe him. Bouncing and shooshing worked.

My binky addict loved his Avent brand binks..but now he's not picky.

If she doesn't want one, I don't think there is much you can do besides go back to the basics. Try the 5 S's from Happiest Baby on the Block. Does she like to be swaddled? If so, there's no harm in occasionally wrapping her up in the middle of the day to make her feel secure. and the white noise app (the oscillating fan setting) on our iphones was INVALUABLE at calming him down. we'd turn it on loud and hold it against his back while bouncing and swaying...or if he was freaking out in the car, we just turned it on and set it on his chest...it was a lifesaver!! good luck!

it can really depend on the brand. orthodontic pacifiers didn't do anything for us and then the binky pacifier:

Thanks guys! Yes, we do the 5S's, and sometimes they work, other times not so much. I'm really looking for help in the car and when we are out and can't swaddle and swing. Yesterday she screamed bloody murder from her carseat at my PP appointment Good times!

I think I may try some other brands but it sounds like its common for some kids to just not be binky fans. My DS found his thumb eventually and we were able to get rid of the binky easily but it was when he was 6 months old and not swaddled anymore.

At three weeks old, Annika decided she was done with pacifiers. We continued to offer them for a while, but once she realized milk doesn't come out of a pacifier, she wasn't falling for it LOL. She does love her thumb, though.
