Life jackets, belts, etc.

Ty will be going swimming a lot this summer, hopefully Smile and I want to get him a life jacket or something to wear in the pools.  Where would I find one?  Would they have them at BRU, Target, etc., or would I only find one at a sporting goods store?  This is something I at least want to look at in person before buying one, so I don't really want to start my search at Amazon like I normally do!

TIA!

Re: Life jackets, belts, etc.

  • We got ours at sports authority, I think Walmart sells them as well.

  • We bought an infant one at Walmart last summer.  DS HATED wearing it, but we were going on several boat rides in ME and it was a non-negotiable for me.  We've also taken him whale watching and used it then.

Personally, I think the one for infants that we have would be too cumbersome to leave on DS for time at a pool.  It's super constrictive and has a pillow behind the head that is awkward.  All of the lifejackets we saw that were designed for infants were pretty much the same in shape and function and would hinder actual movement.

Just an FYI they are made that way so if your child falls in the water the life jacket will flip them over on their back and keep their head above water.  If the life jacket does not have that it is not coast guard approved.  I do agree that they are cumbersome for pool use, we tend to play in the kiddie pool (less than 2 foot deep) until they are around 2 and start learning to swim.  Our life jackets are for when we are on the boat, or visiting the beach.
