Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did your LO start to...

Calm down? My DS is almost 19 months and barely will sit down quietly for a minute. He has NEVER fallen asleep on the couch or playing or anything. I keep wondering when this will all happen.

When did it happen for you?

Re: When did your LO start to...

  • My LO has always been very laid back, but he started sitting down for long periods of time around 12 months. He'll sit & watch about half of Toy Story before he gets up. I know that's terrible, but he LOVES buzz!! You might be in for it mama, it's probably just a part of his personality.

Oh wow. I was really hoping it was just age. FX my next LO can sit for part of a movie. Right now we are lucky if he watches 15 minutes of a Disney show!!

  • L is always on the go.  He may get caught up with his toys and play independently for a while, but he doesn't just sit still to watch tv or zone out and fall asleep.  Some weekends he'll be busy playing for up to an hour or more on his own before he comes and gets me to read him a book or play.

The only time he will relax a bit is when he's sick, then he just wants to cuddle and will pass out in my arms.

  • We joke LO has two speeds - on and off.

For a while she would sit and watch The Lion King or the Winnie the Pooh Movie for 15-20 minutes, but she has grown tired of it and I haven't bought any new movies. She does not sit for Sesame Street or other shows like that.

The past month or so, she will read books for a while - say 10-15 minutes. But not very often. She has also started to play by herself for 15-20 minutes at a time. Thank goodness!

Other than that, it's go-go-go. It's hard to get her to sit down and eat too.

At night it's really hard to get her to settle down too. We have a routine, but it takes an hour to get her to sleep most night because she will almost be asleep and then perk up and start playing.

  • Still waiting for my DS to calm down....see ticker below....

He is a lot calmer than he was as a toddler, but he is still suuuuper active.  That is just his natural temperment. My DD is the exact opposite.

My son will not even fall asleep if I am holding him. He literally has to be in his bed, in his room. It's like anything besides that is a distraction.

He's like that if he's not sick, there's no way he'll fall asleep anywhere but in a car seat or crib.  Recently he had the flu with a pretty nasty fever and he kept wanting comfort and would pass out in my arms on the couch.  I felt bad that he wasn't feeling well, but I totally sucked up every moment of having him snuggle and sleep on me.

This is EXACTLY my LO. Oh I would so do the same thing and love on him every minute he let me cuddle. Thanks for all your help!

  • Another vote for child's personality.

  • DD is 22 months tomorrow and I am still waiting! lol. I always see cute little pictures of toddlers asleep on the couch and I always wonder when that will happen! The only time she will sit still is when Mickey is on.
  • DS is almost 16 months and has just about zero interest in the TV.  He will watch 10 min tops of Elmo and that is it.  He is always on the go but super happy and goofy so I think its just his personality.

  • I really hope they outgrow it. I have to basiclaly jump up and down just to put LO to sleep and he willnot evne walk 5seconds of tv. He is a lot more active that DS#1 and i am running on empty lately.

  • I think his behavior is typical.  I'd be concerned if my kid fell asleep while playing.  My oldest has only fallen asleep on the couch when he's been sick or had a terrible night's sleep.  My youngest, who's a much more mellow child, never has.

Haha, that's exactly how my son is and I did the same thing a couple weeks ago when he was sick with a fever/flu thing. I just sat in the rocking chair all day snuggling him and soaking up every minute.
