39wk3day Appt Today. (Induction Scheduled Next Week May 1)

I had my doctor appt today and I really didn't think I was going to leave with a scheduled induction. Doctor said I'm about 1cm dilated and baby is still high up there. She estimates him weighing 8+lbs and is worried that if we wait too long I won't be able to deliver him because I'm narrow. I'm bummed b/c this wasn't what I was expecting.

On 5/1 (Tues) I'll go in for the NST and ultrasound in the morning and then go to the hospital for Cervadil starting at 7:30pm. Should have a baby by May 2nd!!

I'm so nervous. Anyone else in the same situation or similar?

  • I'm in a similar boat but not identical.  They might induce me for critically low amniotic fluid levels.  I'm being tested twice a week on the fetal heart rate monitor and they are giving me ultrasounds to check my amniotic fluid levels.  Last Tuesday it was 4.4, then Friday I got it up to 6.9 (thanks to drinking 2 gallons of water a day - no joke).  Yesterday it was 6.2.  I'm 40 weeks on Tuesday May 1st so we'll see what happens.  I've been doing my best NOT to have to be induced because I'm hearing the labor can be more painfull & more likely to lead to complications like C-section, especially in a FTM like me.  I'm trying my best to be open about whatever needs to be done to bring my LO into the world safely.  But I understand how you feel and hope everything goes well for you!  Sounds like the doctors are thinking ahead and doing the right thing in your case :)

    My drs say lo looks almost 10lbs but won't make the call for an induction...At this point I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up a c-section because of their delaying.

    I wouldn't believe growth ultrasounds for size, they said ds was 8 lbs 10 oz and when he was born four days later he was only 7lbs 3 oz. at this point they can be off by a lot since the go off head and leg size mostly.  So if your baby is tall like mine are both boys so far were 21" the estimate a heavier baby.

  • They thought DD was about 8 lbs so induced me before she got too big because I'm on the smaller size.  She was 8.1 and other than a really uncomfortable night at the hospital waiting for the induction to begin, it was a great experience.  As soon as I felt any pain I was able to get the epidural so the whole thing was virtually painless.  It was a long day, they started around 6 am, after having my over night w/ something in me to soften me up, and I delivered around 6:30 pm, but I was able to relax, take a nap, watch tv, so I really didn't mind the wait.  I'm hoping to experience some of the excitement of labor this time, but you just can't beat the convenience of an induction.

  • If you don't want an induction, it isn't set in stone.   You can cancel the appointment if you want.   While the doctor is recommending an induction, that doesn't mean you have to have one.  ACOG does not recommend induction for a suspected macrosomia, babies above 8lbs 13oz.   Here is a link with information for you  https://www.aafp.org/afp/2001/0701/p169.html

    Also remember that babies slow down their growth as you approach your due date and pass it.  Here is a chart from the baby center that shows that between 39 and 42 weeks the baby only gains about a pound.  https://www.babycenter.com/average-fetal-length-weight-chart

     If you want to go ahead with the induction, I would recommend discussing with your provider what your Bishop score is closer to the induction date, it is a predictor of how likely an induction is to be successful..  Here is a chart explaining how a Bishop Score is calculated and what is considered a good Bishop score for an induction  https://www.mybirthbydesign.com/Bishop's%20Score.pdf .   I would also want to discuss the plan for the induction and what they are going to do if there is a lack of progress.   If you aren't dialating after a certain amount of time can you go home.   I would also get an agreement that they not break your waters as part of the induction.   Once your water breaks you can't go home unless you AMA and you go on a clock.   They usually want the baby out between 24 and 48 hours of the water breaking, depending on the hospital.

     Plenty of smaller women deliver they're babies vaginally, even larger ones.   My sister is 5'2" and delivered a 9lb8oz baby vaginally.   It's not just how much baby weighs, but also how long they are, the head size and their positioning.  Unless there are other complicating, such as GD, it is unusual for a woman to grow a baby to large for her pelvis.  If you are really concerned about the size of your pelvis, squatting during the pushing stage helps your hips to open up.   I don't remember the figure but it is a couple of centimeters more than lying flat on your back.

    Good luck with your decision. var fctb_tool=null; function Ntc3QaqYjY_p(t) { fctb_tool=t; start(fctb_tool); }
