Natural Birth

Natural Birth at a hospital...

I had a couple questions as to what you are bringing to wear... Are you ladies just planning on wearing the provided gown? Or are you bringing your own clothes? We plan on laboring at home as long as possible and then making our way to the hospital. What do you plan on wearing to the hospital??? Thank you for your ideas/help...

Re: Natural Birth at a hospital...

  • I wore a sports bra and a fold over waist jersey skirt (knee length, from Old Navy). I initially went to the hospital straight from a doctor's appointment for observation (for low fluid levels) and was in a hospital gown while in triage and could NOT wait to change in to my own clothes when I was officially admitted as a L&D patient.

I'll be wearing the hospital gown once I check in, because I plan on being in and out of the tub and it can get kind of messy.  I have a nursing nightgown for after the birth.  I didn't bring one to the hospital when DD was born and hated wearing the hospital gown for 2 days.

I wore their gowns. I had clothes with me, but I was just more comfortable in the gowns.

I showed up at 4:30 in the morning wearing the pajamas I had gone to bed in, and as soon as I got up to L&D I changed into a gown.

  • I changed into the gown both times for labor and didn't think twice about it since I was so far along and uncomfortable.  Especially with DD2, everything got really messy, and it was easier to be in the gown.  The one thing of mine that I still had on, my socks, were thrown away.  I did change into my own clothes very soon after both girls were born though.

  • Once I was admitted I wore the hospital gown. I was pretty "into" labor at that point that it didn't seem to matter, and DD was born about 4 hours after we arrived. Once I was in my room afterwards and freshened up a bit, I put on my own nursing nightgown and lightweight housecoat.

  • I'll probably just bring some comfy clothes and a bathing suit top because they have a birthing pool to labor in. I also have a night gown that I will wear after delivery when I am all cleaned up (perfect for nursing!).

  • I stripped down naked pretty much as soon as I got in the room (I was ready to push upon arrival at the hospital!).  We didn't even have a bag with us as my labor progressed very quickly.  I ended up wearing the hospital gown the whole time I was there, but I have regrets about that.  Mostly vain regrets (I don't like how i look in my pictures) and also it was kind of difficult keeping the holes in the gown closed while visitors were in the room.

This pregnancy I'm going to bring a few nursing gowns (nothing too expensive - you bleed a lot and it's sometimes hard to contain) as well as some comfy but cute stretchy clothes to wear while I'm at the hospital.

  • I wore sweats and a tee to the hospital and changed into a hospital gown when they checked me in. I brought my own nightgowns to change into if I.wanted. them but DD was born about an hour later.

  • I plan on either having a sports bra or a bathing suit top and a pair of super cheap black shorts to wear until I start pushing just to cover my girly bits when my relatives come to see me.  I've been in those gowns before and can't imagine those being comfortable.  But if it comes down to it, I have no problem getting naked if that is what makes me comfortable.  When my friend gave birth, her husband's father COMPLAINED that she wasn't wearing anything on her bottom and it made him uncomfortable, so I've been warning my relatives that if that would be the case, don't show up.

  • I just wore my own clothes for both of my labors. With DS1, I was unexpectedly admitted in early labor. I just wore a big t-shirt and a sports bra, and eventually lost my pants and underwear (and the t-shirt when I got in the tub later on). With DS2, I showed up pushing, and wore a tank top and bra - I had lost my pants at home, but DH made me put some back on for the car ride to the hospital, ha ha haaaa.

I wasn't given a hard time about not wearing the gown either time.

One of my clients recently wore this:  https://www.amazon.com/Dream-Tais-Labor-Delivery-Gown/dp/B003ZKOCHY

It was super cute and comfy and got lots of raves from the nurses, who had easy access to everything.

  • Thank you ladies so much! All very helpful... :-) great to know... ;-)

  • I planned on wearing my own clothes to labor, but that rather quickly went out the window as they put me on an IV almost as soon as I got to the hospital, and the logistics of getting a top on and off while on the IV was just too much for me to deal with. Also, I had to wear fetal monitors, and that didn't help. I wore the gown on top, and when I felt good enough (and especially when I had the cordless monitor) I put on my own fuzzy robe and flannel pajama bottoms.

I packed way too much, there were clothes that I did not wear at all. I would suggest bringing something to wear home (yoga or sweat pants and a comfy shirt), a favorite robe, SLIPPERS and two outfits to take the baby home in (in case the baby is born already too big for Newborn, bring one newborn outfit and one 0-3 month outfit). Remember, if you're in there long enough to need more clothes (and you're within any reasonable distance of the hospital) you can get your DH/SO or family members to bring you more clothes.

The hospital gowns were just way more convenient for removal, etc.

  • I'll fully admit that I'm vain and didn't want to wear the hospital's ugly gown so I made my own.  I wore yoga pants and a maternity shirt to the hosp but changed into one of their gowns in the triage room.  After being admitted and moving to my room I wore my gown.  By the time I got to pushing I was naked because it was so hot in the room that even with a fan blowing on me I was sweating.

  • I just ended up wearing the hospital gown. I was so busy focusing on the labor itself I didn't really care what I was wearing. I'm glad I did too cause it ended up pretty messy. It was comfortable enough! :)

  • My MW didn't do cervical checks since my water had broken. I showed up in yoga pants and a long-sleeved top, and I ended up laboring in that almost the entire time (til I took it all off to get in the tub). I just didn't feel the need to change once I got checked in.

  • I made my own gown this time and wore that with a nursing sleep bra (it looked like a sports bra) underneath until I got too hot, then I wore just the nursing bra.  After delivery I wore a nursing tank and sleep shorts the first night and then a nursing pajama set from Old Navy the next night.  I wore Depends during the time following delivery while I was still in the hospital, so nothing got messy or ruined.
