Curious... Possibly flameful question

DH and I planned on TTC as soon as we were married, so 2 months before our wedding I went off the pill and we used condoms instead. On our wedding night and after we didn't use anything. I must admit I'm not very educated when it comes to ovulation and the best times to actually conceive. We were ready to have a baby, but I also wasn't temping or charting, and to be honest I hadn't heard much about any of that until coming on The Bump.

Anyways, I guess I was wondering if anybody here could explain how ovulation works? I had read that it was 12-16 days before your period. Also, do people normally have their first period after becoming pregnant? If my last period was September 19, and I am due June 25, we would have conceived in September correct? I'm sorry if I sound naive about all of this I truly just want to understand so I can better understand it all when we TTC#2

Re: Curious... Possibly flameful question

  • I'm far from an expert on this, but most women with a 28 day cycle do ovulate between 12-16 days after the start of their period.  You probably conceived in late Sept/early Oct depending on your ovulation schedule.  There are ovulation predictor kits you can purchase if you want to try to see when you ovulate, but there is no need to temp or use those if you can get pregnant without doing those things.

So I guess my question with this is, my due date is exactly 40 weeks from the start of my last period (September 19) so did I actually conceive after my last period? I suppose this is all something I should ask my doctor about! I mean it doesn't really matter when it happened I'm just curious if we had a honeymoon baby (September 5-10) or not lol.

  • My last period started on September 15th.  We had sex (unprotected) on the 27th, 29th and 30th of September.  I ovulated on October 1st or 2nd and I believe I conceived on the 2nd b/c I had a crazy amount of CM with a tiny bit of pink spotting.

Your best time for conceiving (in most cases, nothing is fool proof) is about 3 days before you ovulate, the day you ovulate, and up to 48 hours after you ovulate.  That is because sperm can live in a womans body for 2-3 days, but the egg is only viable for about 24-48 hours after ovulation.

I ovulate (usually) about 12-15 days after the start of my period.  I believe I ovulated late (on day 17 or 18) which is why I conceived.  We weren't technically trying, but had been using the rythmn method for about 4 months.  I think the "lucky sperm" were "deposited" lol when we had sex late in the day on Sept. 30th.  That would mean his swimmers hung around for 2 days before scoring (funny because he was out of town that weekend, so I concieved when he wasn't even around!

    Does this help?

Yes! So we aren't actually pregnant for 40 weeks... They just go 40 weeks from the start of your last period to calculate a possible due date? Thank you for explaining! I guess my education on this topic is lacking!

  • The only reason I know all this is because we were using the rythmn method, which kind of forces you to know your cycle really really well.  So no, you aren't technically pregnant for 40 weeks.  The first two weeks you aren't pregnant at all, your egg hasn't even arrived at the scene!

So you probably conceived sometime a little after I did- in the first week of October, which means the sperm that knocked you up lol was deposited the first day or two of October.  You wouldn't have another period once you conceive.  So no honeymoon baby.  Sorry! :)

(Although we told everyone we conceived on our honeymoon in Italy!)

Correct.  The 40 weeks of pregnancy include the 2-ish weeks prior to ovulation.  The only way to know when you ovulate is to take your Basal Body Temperature (BBT) and track it.  The girls on the TTGP board have a wealth of knowledge and you can learn alot about your body and cycle from Fertility Friend website and Taking Charge of Your Fertility.

For me personally, if the Dr calculates by my LMP, my due date is a full week off of calculating by my ovulation date.  I tend to ovulate late and have a short luteal phase which makes a big difference.  I was induced as 8 days overdue last time when I really may have just been at my 40th week.  Scary.

Haha thanks! We went to Jamaica for our honeymoon and I kept telling people (before I knew I was pregnant) that Ja-Make-A baby in Jamaica... Corny I know but I found it humerous lol.

LoL this is exactly what happened to us.  It was actually our 7th month ttc and I didn't think it would happen that month because DH had to leave on orders for 3 weeks to FL 2 days before I was "supposed" to ovulate.  I was tracking my cycle with Fertility Friend and using ovulation test strips so I had a pretty good idea of when I would ovulate.

We got sexy time in the night before he left and sure enough 2 days later I ovulated....I thought it was lousy timing, so I REALLY thought that I wouldn't get pregnant on this try.

To my surprise a couple weeks later I took a pregnancy test just for the hell of it and to my shock there were 2 beautiful pink lines!  DH was still gone so I had to keep it to myself for a whole week which was torture!

Wow I really went off on a tangent but ya a "true" pregnancy is technically 38 weeks but you add on the 2 extra weeks because doctors go off the first day of your last period.  They do this because a lot of women don't track their cycle there for they don't know when they actually ovulated.

  • I did not know much before coming on the bump, as I just never looked into it. I learned alot here.

When it is time for TTC#2 I suggest looking into the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and the website Fertility Friend. These are the best tools I found. If you want just for curiousity check out the site now. It explains ovulation and when it occurs and such.

I found this book extremely helpful too.  You will feel like you really understand your body if you read it.

Ditto.  I use a free phone app (android) called OvuView, and it's amazing.

This book and also the Fertility Friend website (there is a link in my siggy and also many others) that will track if for you.  I TTC for 12 months and these taught me a ton of info that I never know before.

Yep!  TCOYF is really great.  I thought I was pretty well educated, but I still learned a ton from this book

  • You've gotten some great explanations and advice for things to read.  I just wanted to throw out another app called FMC.  I was off BC for about 1.5 years (we did pull and pray or condoms) and I have really irregular periods (24-50 days) so I use the FMC app to track my periods.  The app kind of learns what your 'average' length is and colors the calendar with green on your estimated fertile days.

You are due the same day I am.  My last period was 9/15 and we had unprotected sex on 10/2 and those days were green on my app, so I ovulated sometime at the beginning of October.  So no, you didn't conceive on your honeymoon.

  • Just wanted to add that not everyone ovulates between days 12-16. We were TTC/charting for 16 months and the earliest I ever ovulated was on day 18 (which is when we actually conceived). I would ovulate between day 22 and 24 routinely, and then would randomly O on day 19 or day 26. With taking my basal body temp (BBT) and observing the fertility signs (as is written in TCOYF), I almost always knew exactly when I would and did ovulate without guessing.

Another vote for reading this book. It sure helped me understand a lot of things about myself.
