Working moms who pump ...

This seems like it should be simple, but I get brain freeze every time I try to work it out.  I am trying to prepare for when I return to work and my daughter starts daycare.  I will be pumping and sending BM to daycare with her - I'm assuming enough for 3-4 feedings during the day, plus an extra.  About how many bottles total should I purchase?  I don't want to be locked into washing everything every night, but I don't want 50 million bottles and bottle parts rattling around the kitchen either.  Anyone have a good, middle of the road number that works for them?  TIA!

  • I had around 8 and it was enough. I had 3 sets of the collection bottles and then I'd make up her feeding bottles each night for the next day.  She only took 3 bottles a day usually.

  • My DD took 3-4, 4oz bottle per day at daycare.  We had about 6 or 7 bottles and we didn't buy them all at once.  But I would caution you not to buy too many of any one bottle type until you know that your DC will drink from it.  It took us a while to find one that DD would latch onto.  You can always buy more as you figure out how many you need.
  • My DS's daycare washes the bottles.  They keep the nipples there, and just send the empty bottles and caps home (I use Playtex drop-ins) so I never have to wash his bottles, just my pump parts/bottles.  Are you sure your DD's daycare won't do the same?
  • Our daycare doesn't wash bottles.  We decided it was way easier for us to have more bottles and not have to worry about washing them every night.  So, we've got about 7 right now, and DH would buy more if he had his choice.  DS eats 3-4 bottles a day at daycare.  I've also got a boatload of medela pump bottles and 3 sets of pump parts.  I rotate 2 sets of the pump parts and keep one at work as an emergency set after forgetting pieces at home a couple of times.

  • I figure I'm washing pump parts every night so its not a big deal for me to wash the bottles as well.  I really like the idea of keeping a set of pump parts at work for an emergency if I forget anything.
