Should I buy a used breast pump?

I have a friend who is selling her Medela breast pump for $80. This sounds incredibly tempting, considering how expensive they are new. But I'm concerned about it being safe/sanitary.

I've found a couple of websites that say that the Medela pumps are hospital grade pumps, and operate on a closed system, meaning that the parts that come in contact with the milk and body parts are replaceable, and that they are safe for multiple users.

Have any of you considered buying a used pump? Would you?

  • I would if I knew the person and then I would order all new replacement parts.

Most people would tell you not to...

  • I bought mine from MissNikki007 Cool. I like her bewbs, so that was a great selling point. I don't know that I would buy one from somewhere that I didnt know where it had been though. But, you can buy replacement parts for it on Amazon pretty inexpensively.
  • If it's a friend, I would and just buy new parts.

That said, find out if she's having more kids and will want it back or anything random. I wouldn't want to be responsible for it if anything happened.

  • The Medela Symphony is the hospital grade closed system which sells used for $400-$700. The Medela Pump in Style is NOT a closed system. There is risk of contact of the piece with milk. Ameda is a cheaper closed system that can be used by multiple users.
  • It is not recommended to do so.  As tempting as it is I wouldn't do it.

This. But I guess since she is selling it and not lending it, she wouldn't expect it back. I had someone offer to lend me theirs, and I would have gotten replacement parts, but I am just going to get my own. We've been saved up a little extra money specifically for the pump.

  • I don't see a cleanliness problem with it, but my used pump crapped out after just a few months of use and I had to buy a new one anyway.

  • I totally wouldn't unless it really is the Symphony and not the Pump in Style.  The non-closed system pumps can get milk in the motor and mold & you'd never know.  The peace of mind knowing that my baby is not getting mold particles was worth the price of a new Ameda that I can sell when I'm done!

  • I used my sister's Medela PISA. I pumped a couple times a day for 6 months and milk never even came anywhere close to getting anywhere near the motor/pump itself. It never even went up into the tubes. I feel like you'd seriously have to abuse it for that to happen?

  • I did. I bought entirely new pumping parts though. I have no regrets. It turns out that the person I bought it was a friend of my husbands. Somehow that made me feel better about it.

For the milk to get all the way to the air compressor..... it'd be pretty amazing. Those tubes are pretty long.
