ear infections?

How many of your LO have had one or multiple ear infections?  Is the Dr. concerned about them and mentioned tubes?

DS is on ear infection number 3...one in December, one in March and one in April.  The one he has now did not go away with the first round of antibiotics and now he is going for another 10 days on a different antibiotic(augmentin).  Each one came along with a cold, and the fluid backed up into his ears.  Just wondering if its common for them to get a few ear infections in cold/flu season.

Re: ear infections?

  • We're on number 5 now.  Every time he gets the sniffles, he gets an ear infection.  My pedi said some babies are just prone to them.  He said we'll start talking tubes at 6 ear infections in a season (but he doesn't really care for tubes, so I don't know where that conversation will go).

DD had a double ear infection about 2 months ago coupled with RSV.  I had tubes twice so we are hoping she doesn't follow in her mommy's footsteps!

  • We are on 6... I had 4 sets of tubes as a child so....

Dr. said they are hesitant to put tubes in during the summer months because they cannot always see the immediate changes due to the seasons changing...

  • We just finished up antibiotics for ear infection #5 (he started getting them in January & has had them pretty much back to back since then)  we go to the ENT on Friday to see if tubes are the best option right now.

  • We've had two, one was double.  I could have swore he was coming down with one a few weeks ago, but the symptoms only lasted 2 days (weekend), and by Monday he was normal again so we didn't go to the doctor.

I've also heard that Summer months may not be the best to put in tubes since it's harder to tell if they're working, but the way I look at it is, if my kid is going to continue to be miserable I'll do what's necessary.  If it doesn't seem to help once cold and flu season comes back then we could reevaluate.

Luckily we're not in that boat, though I'm surprised because at first I thought he seemed prone to them.  I was as well so it wouldn't shock me if he ends up.

  • M had constant ear infections, starting last fall. He got tubes in Jan and they've made a world of difference. Our surgeon's requirements were 6 infections in  6 months, or 6 straight weeks of fluid. We had 6 infections in 6 weeks, so it was a no-brainer from us. He's been a different baby since getting the tubes. So worth it!

  • Wow, I could have written this- my DD also had an ear infection in December, March, and now one in April that didn't go away with the first treatment.  The doctor said if it's not gone after this next round of antibiotics, she's referring us to an ENT for tubes... which at this point I actually wouldn't mind too much- I feel bad that her ears cause her so much pain!

  • B has had 5 since January, and the last 3 have been double, plus back-to-back since the end of March.  We have an appointment with the ENT next month.

Augmentin wasn't as bad as the Ceftin he's currently on.  I just hate meds, I feel like I'm always medicating him. =(

  • We've had four or five. No mention of tubes by her Dr.

DD has had 6 ear infections...all since she started daycare in September (3 months old). The last 2 ear infections needed 2 rounds of antibiotics. The pedi referred us to a pediatric ENT and we have an appt next week, so we'll see what he says.

For those that said their doctors are against tubes, do you know why?
