Cloth Diapering

Hybrid Cloth Diapers

I am really wanting to cloth diaper when I have my baby. I was thinking that a cloth diaper where I could use either a disposable or a reusable insert would be the best option for us. But I'm not sure what is a good brand or wehre to start looking. I would love some suggestions so that I could look into all my options. Thank you for your help.

Re: Hybrid Cloth Diapers

  • Two of the most popular brands are Flips and GroVia.  I've never tried the GroVia so I don't have much to say about them. (They look cool but are pricier than Flips). The Flips are fantastic, IMO.  We mostly use cloth but I have, on occasion, used the disposable inserts.  I used them once on vacation where we couldn't wash that often and then once when my LO had a really bad rash and I needed to use non CD friendly diaper cream.  I think you will find that once you get into CDing, you will prefer the cloth over the disposable inserts, but it is nice to have the option when you need it.

  • We use both the grovia and the flips. I like the flips better but my husband prefers the grovia. They are easier for him to use. You just snap in the liner and go. With the flips you have to position it and that gets tedious with a wiggle worm for him. I have used the grovia disposable inserts on vacation once and I will say I hated them. They barely held anything and leaked. If I had to use disposable I would just buy a small pack of disposable diapers instead.

  • We used GroBaby (now GroVia) and Best Bottom diapers. The velcro on the GroBaby diapers failed after 3 months of use (granted, I washed them in hot, but it just didn't feel sanitary to me to wash them in warm water only) and we had problems with the covers retaining the urine smell (I think they have addressed this problem by adding a waterproof backing to the inserts now). We were very happy with the Best Bottom diapers overall, but we did have the elastic fail on 3 of our diapers and the organic cotton/hemp inserts irritated my son's skin and some of them developed holes after more than a year of use.
  • I am a pretty big GroVia diaper fan. Best bottoms come in a close second :)

  • I use Flips as my disposable option.  It's actually impressive how much they hold.

  • We love the grovia AI2s.  They are our favorite hybrid diaper, we use them pretty much all day long.  I prefer that the inserts snap in, and have elastic gussets (we've never had a leak).  The disposable inserts have always worked fine for us, but I do change her every two hours.  One thing I like about the grovia, is that the covers hand wash really well in a sink (important if you are traveling).  Plus, the aplix is the best of any of the diaper brands.

I'm sort of meh about Flips.  The inserts shift around a lot, the covers are cut really wide, and it's just a single gusset.  Runny poo doesn't wash off as well if you are hand washing, although they are fine in the washing machine.  I haven't ever tried their disposable insert.

Gdiapers work well for us, but there is a steeper learning curve.  There are more parts to clean/use, so I prefer the grovia for traveling.

  • It is too funny I found your post today because I just posted an article about Hybrid Cloth Diapering on my blog!

I currently use the Flip Hybrid Cloth Diapering system and LOVE it! It is what most of my stash is made of! They are on my little guy right now! I use the Stay dry inserts and sometimes walmart prefolds. The price if fairly reasonable! I also have them in snaps:-) Hope this helps
