DH is forbidding my B-day ideas

I showed him the outfit I got for T to wear for his smash the cake photos which match our Very Hungry Caterpillar theme and he forbid him to wear it.  He said it was silly and he hated it.  My feelings were seriously hurt and now I am rethinking having a party at all.  I was going over the top with decorations and now I just dont want to listen to how he hates it all.  Suggestions? Do you think boyish?

Here is the outfit I bought plus a matching t-shirt with his name and a 1 on it for the party.

Got it!! Smash the cake photos!!!

Re: DH is forbidding my B-day ideas

  • I think it is cute, and you only get the first birthday once right?  What about a compromise?  He can wear the diaper and shirt but no hat?
  • Loading the player...
  • Is he serious?  I have to ask that because that's just crazy to me.  I suppose I would be shocked if my DH said the same thing.  With that being said, I would not say it is exactly girly, but there is a lot of red in there.  I however, see nothing wrong with that, as I put DS in pink shirts.

I would just keep doing what you are doing, but maybe do as PP said, see if there is anyway to make the outfit more boyish.  Then tell your DH that you don't want his opinions anymore, if he has nothing nice to say don't say anything at all.

It isn't that girly so it sounds to me like he just wanted to have something to say about it.  That's the theme we will be doing for our son's 2nd birthday, I think it looks great!

Oh one more thing, maybe whoever you got the outfit from could make you a matching tie.  Maybe that would make the outfit more boyish and show that he is a boy, although I still think with what you have it would look great.  I know the cake smash outfit we have for DS is a diaper cover, hat and a tie.  Just a suggestion!

  • We're doing Hungry Caterpillar as well and I was considering buying this as well!

I am also getting a shirt with a 1 on it with a Hungry Caterpillar theme AND I bought Hungry Caterpillar Robeez... so I'm all for going over the top.

I planned on going over the top with the decorations and I'm starting to scale it back a bit, just because the food alone will be daunting at most likely 75 people there. I'm still going to do a colorful theme with the plates, etc. but I'm scaling down to:
    - Red and Green Balloons outside
    - Caterpillar photo banner
    - Maybe some paper lanterns on the ceiling of our deck for outdoor color
    - Dot smash Cake

The rest will be basic party stuff, but in colors from the book.

As for your DH - boo to him!  HOwever, I think men have a hard time visualizing stuff like this, so honestly I think you should just go with it and he'll see how amazing it all turns out at the party!

ETA: Also, I just wanted to point out that if he thinks the red is too much, I'm doing much more green than any other color at the party - if that helps at all!

  • He did mention that if it was in blue he might like it a little better.  The red was just too much.  But our pictures are this Sunday so its a little late to make changes now.  I asked what he would like him to wear instead and he had no suggestions so I may just put my foot down on this one and put him in the diaper cover and tie for the pictures.  It matches the invites for goodness sake!

Then at the party maybe I can accentuate the blue or green in the decorations.

Thanks ladies for letting me vent!

Oh, there is a tie already.  Put your foot down, use it, rather do that than waste money.  Maybe take another outfit to get other photos as well before you do the cake smash, but I think it will look cute and you shoudl do what you had planned.

  • i'm sorry, i don't mean this to be dismissive of your conflict, but it will be a cold day in hell when my DH tells me what i can or can't put my child lol.

OMG We are married to the same man!

I pinned this one yesterday to show DH (the style not the color) and he said hell no.

I finally compromised with him.  Party stays.  I get pro pics.  Nix the hat and the tye.

  • huh, I don't think of red as a girl color at all. Maybe it's the feathers/foofy stuff on the hat throwing him off? I know you guys dress T in "little man" clothes a lot, so maybe something that babyish is making him think it's not manly or something? Can you do more than one outfit for his pics? Maybe some of him with the diaper cover and tie and then if he is still saying he hates it, do some without?

Don't give up on the party! Tell him you're open to his input, but unless he can tell you what it is he wants intead, you're going to have to go with the ideas you do have.

  • Maybe I need to see that on a baby but really? I agree with YH on this one. It looks like a humiliating clown outfit! And I also think YH should have a say in this, it's his child too. I mean, the diaper cover might look cute by itself but that hat is just way too much. But it sounds like I should have saved this for my UO tomorrow...Hope you guys are able to come to an agreement!

  • Don't give up on the party!  Maybe just compromise on the outfit- like PPs said maybe no hat or no pants then take pics in 2 outfits (one he chooses).  And I'm sure he'll love the decorations and all once you have them all up and ready.

FWIW, DH nixed the Hungry Caterpillar theme, too.  He just couldn't get into it.  We actually looked on the Internet and found one we BOTH love.  He's totally on board, and now I get to spend more money since he likes what we're doing. :)

Jumping on this train.  I think the hat is what is throwing me off personally.

Hope you find a compromise. :)

  • My hubby doesn't care what I put B in, and he would totally nix that.  But I also wouldn't put him in it...I can't handle clowns and it reminds me of clowns.

I think he should have a say for the first birthday, though - it's his baby, too!

I'm sorry OP but I am also with YH on this one :(  Not a fan of the outfit if I'm being honest.  I agree with Lolly that it's his child too and he should get input in the decision.  And I think skipping the party entirely is silly just over an outfit or a disagreement on theme.

  • I love the diaper cover on its own.  The cake smash photos signify 1st birthday on their own, I think, even without the hat and "1" on it.  I bet DH wouldn't mind as much without the hat, etc.  I feel like the hat makes it more costumey and takes attention away from your adorable little guy.  I think it might be hard for anyone to outshine that hat.  That said, maybe the diaper cover for the pics and he wears just the hat with a solid coloured shirt on his birthday while you sing to him or something.  Plus, I am not sure the trim on the hat would clean up well post-cake smash, unlike the diaper cover.  Or do some pics with fewer pieces of the outfit and some other clothing changes too, so they aren't all too over-the-top for DH.
