Re: What's your BFing Goal? How long? Clicky Poll

  • Right now, my goal is 6 months EBF.  We're almost there.  I would love to nurse beyond 1 year, but I'm really sick of pumping at work, so I'm going to re-evaluate next month and decide if I want to try cutting back on pumping.

  • We're almost at a year and I can't imagine stopping. He would be so heartbroken. We'll see how things go if I get pregnant, but that's the only thing that might be a bump in the road. Teeth are no big deal.
  • Before I took a BFing class (while pregnant) my goal was 6 months, afterwards it became 6 months with a stretch goal of a year.

After DS was born we had some difficulties, so while my goal was still 6/12 months, I broke it down into small increments so that I wouldn't go crazy.  First goal was 1 month, then 3, then 6 and 12.  Once I hit three months, I knew I would make it to 12 months.

We are now at almost 18 months, and still going strong.  I am still pumping at work once a day, but hope to finish that once he transitions to WCM at daycare (still working on it).  Ideally, I would love to do child-led weaning, but if we start to approach 2.5-3 years I will encourage him to wean.

  • My first goal was just to get till when I had to go back to work at 4 months. Then it became 5 months and then 6.  We are still going strong ad she is 8. I think I have enough of a stash to make it to 9.5. After that, I would like to continue to BF but will probably have to add in some formula since my stash is running low and I can only pump once a day at work. If we make it to a year, I think I will start weaning at that point.

  • We do CLW. DD is 3y3m and still nurses. She says she will share with DC2. I will nurse DC2 until s/he decides to wean.
  • I voted 1 year, but I have no problems going beyond that! As long as DDs and I still enjoy our nursing relationship I plan to continue to 18mo-2yr.

We had a LOT of difficulty to start with. Girls were early and in NICU, latch problems, nipple shields, supplementing with bottles of pumped BM and tons of pumping! Like PP I had to break it down into small goals so I wouldn't go crazy! My short term goal now is 6 months (almost there!) and long term is a year.

  • I picked "as long as possible" but right now I'm thinking I will do some gentle mother-led weaning if we are still nursing at 2 years.  That may change when we get there.
  • My first goal was a year, and I made it past that, and still going strong! I am in the process of transitioning to WCM during the day, so I can stop pumping at work. I am so sick of the pump. I will continue nursing first thing in the AM, and to sleep, as long as he wants to do it.

  • I change my goal as I meet it, that way I don't have a huge disappointment if I don't make it to a year.

My current goal is May 24th. My first goal was through my maternity leave. since I met that, I changed it.

  • my goal was 18 months but right now we are going on 20 months.  I guess I would like to make it to 2 years but I'm not sure if we will or not.

The WHO reccomends 2 years so that would be the best case scenario.

  • I never really had a goal. I always have said that I will nurse as long as it works for both me and DD. That said, now that I am past those difficult early stages and dealing with thrush and mastitis and sore nipples and waking up every 45 minutes, I am in absolutely no hurry to stop.  It is actually relaxing and something I look forward to now. So, I selected as long as possible.

  • I voted 6 months b/c that's when I return to work.  I would like to continue from there, but pumping will depend upon my class schedule--I teach.

  • 1 year has been my goal since the beginning, but it's feeling like such a long time away right now. Everyone says it will get better as she gets older, and I've found that to be true so far, but it's still hard. BFing is a bigger commitment than I realized.

  • Assuming we can transition to EBF, my goal is 1 year. If that doesn't work and I end up EPing again, my goal will be 6 months (made it 8mo with DD1).

  • My plan was for as long as she wanted, but to be perfectly honest, her mouth full of teeth have changed my opinions.  We'll see how things are going at 1 yr.  if her latch hasn't improved, that'll probably be the end.

My goal was always to a year and then as long as we were both happy continuing.  He ended up pretty much self weaning at 16 months.
  • I EBFed DD1 until she was 1 year and then she weaned at about 14 months. With DD2 my goal is until she turns 1 (in 2 weeks) and then I will stop pumping at work and nurse her morning, nights and weekends, and see what happens....

I feel sad though that it's coming to an end, this is probably my last baby, so I may never ever BF again... and also having my baby turn 1 and becoming a toddler is so bittersweet....time flies... :(

The other part of me is happy that I will soon have my body back. I have 20 pounds to lose and I have not been on any diets or work outs because I didn't want to affect my supply. I will finally be able to do this and get my prepregnancy body back...hopefully...

  • I voted as long as possible, though we want to TTC when he is a year old so that may impact how long I end up BFing him.

  • My goal is one year, but I wouldn't cut her off at that point. I'm enjoying the bonding :)

  • I plan on continuing morning and night nursing for as long as she wants.  I had cut out nursing during the day about a month ago since I wasn't even pumping an ounce at work, but we have a freezer supply that will last us well past a year.  My milk supply definitely took a dive when I got pregnant, but only for a few weeks.  I am sure if I would have stuck it out with my pumping at work it would have come back, but I was ready to be done pumping too.

  • Prior to having my baby, I knew I wanted to BF, and for as long as I could. Like any first time BF mom, my first couple of weeks were bumpy, painful and a lot of cluster feeding that I thought would never end. Suddenly we were at 2.5 months and really in the hang of things, then the sharp shooting pains started, followed by blisters. I have literally had a blister every week since March 1st. It's so painful and I have felt like giving up EVERY week, but I look at my daughter and don't allow myself to. I am now on my 5th antibiotic to try and kick this infection and I am hoping that once this is taken care of, we will get back to our goal of "BF as long as I can." I can't wait for the days of pain free BF again. But even through all this pain and pills, I refuse to quit. I encourage all of you to keep at it. You're doing a great job giving your babies the best nutrition possible. :)

  • My goal (both with my son and with the upcoming baby) is 12 mo. My son wasn't very interested in continuing BFing when he turned a year. I stopped offering, he asked for it twice (both times he sucked a few times and then was done) and then never again. He's always been very interested in solid food. I was more than happy to wean and to have my boobies back to myself. However, if this baby wants to continue BFing after a year, I am more than willing to let them until they are ready to wean. I feel like it should be a mutual decision if at all possible. (That's my statement for myself, not for other women!)
  • My initial goal was 6 months...my bunny boy never latched so i always pumped and bottle fed him the BM. Now that he's almost 6 months i was thinking about continuing to pump but recently found out im preggo again (yay!!!) :) but being pregnant has all but dried up my BM...so i guess i'll be sticking with my initial goal!
