Michael as a middle name for a girl???

OK - so if we have a boy, the middle name is going to be Michael, after my father.  If we have a girl, the name will be Halley Emma.  Would it be terrible to name a baby girl Halley Emma Michael?  It's kind of important to me to name the baby after my father....but I don't want to scar the poor kid.

Thoughts please!!!

  • I wouldn't but I have a pretty intense hate of boys names on girls.

ETA: I like the next two suggestions about Michaela.

  • I think Michael would be weird for a girl. What about Michaela?

Michael can be a girl name too - it's rare but I do know a female with the first name of Michael.  So I don't see any harm in it being a MN.

  • I don't think it would be weird as a middle name- especially a second middle name and one that is used for a reason (to honour your dad). But Michaela is a good option as well (that is my lil sister's FN and that is how my parents spelled it)

  • Well, since the name Michael was originally an angel's name, and angels are supposed to be unisex, I don't see a problem with it. If your little girl doesn't like it then she doean't have to use her second middle name. Either that, or I knew a girl who went be "Mikey." Her name was Mikaela.

  • I had never heard of a girl being named directly after a man until my cousin became pregnant. They found out they were having a girl. Well this is the first grandchild on her side and its full of girls. She has 2 other sisters. I think grandpa had wanted a boy so he had some ammo on the girls but that didn't happen. They decided to name her Stella Thomas after her dad Thomas. At first I thought it was weird but now its grown on me. I wouldn't do it but it doesn't sound terrible. My husband's name is Michael but I won't be naming my DD after him. Only if we have a boy will we. Its up to you but my suggestion is coming up with a name that sounds like Michael but isn't...Michaela was mentioned and that is cute!

  • I'm 33 and a career girl, through and through (plus, I make the money)...full time day care for two would be around $1500 a month.  We don't live by any family who can watch the kids.  I really don't think there will be another.

I don't think using it as a middle name is any weirder than using a last name as a middle name (ie: mom's maiden name) for a kid, or an adult. I'm kind of surprised how many people think it's strange.

    This.

I had an aunt named Michael. Unfortunately, there was also a boy in her generation so they were Michael Boy and Michael Girl. That probably stunk.

  • Personally, I like the idea a lot.  I think it's unique and Michael wouldn't be her first name, so not a big deal to me.

  • People always say "if you like the name who cares what other people think."  I'm not that person.  If you get a lot of negative opinions from strangers now, chances are your kid will get them later in life too.

That being said, I don't care in the least for Michayla based on the extreme popularity of it right now.  My niece is Machayla and she has 3 other ones (various spellings) in her 1st grade class.

I wouldn't do 2 middle names myself, but like just Halley Michael without the Emma.  I really like Emma Michael too.  I have always wanted to use the name Violet James in honor of my Dad but my DH hates Violet.

  • If you like it, go for it. I know a little girl named Claire Thomas. If you really wanted to make it "girly", just spell it "Michal", because that is a girl's name. It's not the spelling that counts; it's the fact that you're wanting to honor your father that makes it special.

  • My first thought was no way Jose. But then as a second middle name, I don't hate it. I was also going to suggest michaela or whatever spelling of it. It's NMS, but a cool way to honor your dad.

My moms name is Patricia and my dads middle name is Patrick, so they gave me the middle name Patrice. It's after both of them, but still a different name.

  • My cousin's daughter has the middle name George.

TO be fair, she told her (now ex) H that he could pick the name. The only stipulations were that the first name had to be one they discussed and the middle had to be after someone in her family. He picked George. But it fits her personality (she's a little tomboy).

  • My daughter is Amelia Brent after my brother (Brent) - we weren't sure if we would have another child and even then it might not be a boy so we named her after him.  IMO, it's your kid name her whatever you like and the name has meaning so it's more than just throwing a boys name onto a girl.
  • i LOVE boy names for girls, or unisex names! I am actually thinking of naming my girl Mikah if i have a girl........ My bfs name is Michael so tht would be close to his name. you could always use Mikah or Micah for a middle name for your daughter.

But its your child and you should name her what ever you like

  • Michael is actually a family name on my mom's side, but when we want to use it for a girl we use the feminine version which is Michele (my mom, little sister, other various family members) I would use that instead of Michael, it's way too masculine in my opinion.
