My son had severe milk protein issues and BFing never went well so we used Alimentum. DD is also showing some signs of issues but she is a good BF'er and the original plan was to BF until I went back to work in August.
If I were to eliminate dairy from my diet, how severe do I need to go? I started to look at labels and everything says it contains dairy and soy. Did you have to read every label or could you just eliminate the major dairy stuff - cheese, milk, yogurt etc?
What kind of milk alternative could you use? Almond?
Although I'm sure this would be a great weight loss program for me, I am really stressed trying to find healthy, QUICK things to eat while caring for a toddler and a fussy newborn.
If she ends up having severe issues like DS did, I may have to throw in the towel and go to FFing. Which I am ok with if it saves my sanity, i'd just prefer for her to have my milk to keep her immune system up with DS bringing home daycare germs.
Re: dairy free moms - questions
I'm usually DF when not pg. It is a great way to keep off the weight.
For me, I can only tolerate yogurt. I'm pretty strict about it, although I've found that dairy in baked goods do no affect me. I usally just drink Silk soy milk, love the taste!
I'm not sure it needs to be a severe DF diet when it comes to BFing.

I just cut out the obvious dairy with Ryan as well. I say start with that and if, after some time, it doesn't seem to do the trick, I'd try something different.
Good luck!

I cut out everything with dairy and soy then reintroduced soy baked in things after about 2 weeks which went fine. I then tried to reintroduce dairy baked into things and it was an epic fail. I was dairy free until DS turned 1 and then he had to switch to an elemental formula. ALmond products are good...my favorite substitute was coconut milk products. So Delicious makes a really good yogurt, milk, and ice cream just make sure it the coconut not soy variety *even if soy is OK it doesn't taste as good*. Amy's makes good quick dairy free meals and pizza's that are yummy and Vans has some good frozen products as well. I chose to not even both getting imitation cheeses because they are gross. GL!
ETA: I think most people who's kiddos don't have a severe reaction do fine when they reintroduce the hidden dairy so don't get scared my my example. I would eliminate it all at first though because it's easier to add back in and see a difference than to slowly eliminate and see no difference and not know what is and isn't working. It takes 2 or more weeks for dairy to leave your system completely.

I went all out, including eggs and nuts, but I just learned to read the koshermarkings and realized I was still consuming dairy derivatives.Silk brand soy milk has some (look for the D next to the U) so now I'm switching to another brand and coconut milk.
For snacks I keep fresh fruits, dried fruits, humus, bagels, carrots and smaller portions of meals. Special K red berries, the new, is dairy free. Couscous and chicken is a staple. I mix fresh veggies and make several meals.I bake lactation cookies and that helps with calories. It is hard to maintain weight and I'm paranoid of losing my supply..
I think it's worth it. I wish I could do nuts and eggs, that gives you more options.
