2nd time moms

DD is 17 months and I've started weaning the night time and morning bottle. Only DD won't drink milk out of a cup. I don't want issues when #2 comes and weaning. She's small in weight so I hate that she's not getting the calories or fat any suggestions?  Should I do cold turkey or one bottle at a time. Or wait?!

Re: 2nd time moms

  • I would try buying several different kinds of cups and see if one works better.  DS was kind of picky when it came to cups.  He had a hard time drinking from any of the straw ones or the one with the plug thingys (I'm having a pregnancy brain moment and can't think of the correct name).  With DS we found that the Born Free cups with the free flow top worked well for him.  We also used Playtex cups and took out the plug- it made spills more frequent, but he could drink from them.  I know other kids that only would use the straw kind.

  • Ditto different styles of cups. You can also do yogurt and cheese to up calories.  DS was little and the pedi said he needed some extra calories and suggest an renglish muffin with cheese, or a yogurt.

  • We stopped the bottle cold turkey around 15 months. It took him a few days to realize that he wasn't going to get the bottle anymore, but once he did, he took milk from a cup just fine. We tried every cup under the sun and the ones that worked the best were those cheap take and toss ones. Also, to up calories, we give Tyler yogurt with oatmeal mixed in every morning.

  • I tried ds with a sippy cup a few times none worked. Then I found one with a silicone nipple like a bottle and he took that at ten months. 3 days later I put all the bottles away and we've been on cups ever since.

You said your child won't take milk from the cup.  If she will drink other things from it then I would go cold turkey. She will come around. A friend of mine did that and it only took two days to get her daughter to just take the milk without a fuss. Just keep offering it.

  • Thanks everyone. Today was day 1 no bottles, the milk constipated her and she was very constipated last night so I didn't milk this morning because of it. Tonight she didn't want the cup of milk and kept saying "bah bah" and threw the cup!  We have munchkin, Nuby, Nuk, born free.  I'm going to try the Take & Toss next. Wish me luck!

  • If she won't drink anything from the cup, you could try giving her something different in the cup, water or juice (if you are going to do juice). It might make her want to drink from the cup if she's getting something different. That's what I did with DD at first. If it's just the milk, I agree to go cold turkey. DD is so stubborn and strong willed and would hold out for her bottle. It only took a couple of days for her to figure out if she wanted it she was going to have to get it from the cup.

  • I have to 2nd and 8th the different cup. DS wouldn't drink from a sippy until we got those cheap Take and Toss cups (we reuse them) but the liquid comes out so easy from them. It just took him understanding where to get the milk from and he was taking a sippy like a pro.

  • No she will drink water and juice from her sippy, just not milk.  I am going to get the take & toss.  I caved this morning and gave her a bottle.  I'm at least going to try to get rid of the nighttime bottle.
