BF babies - Vit. D?

James just had his 4 month well-check and the pedi wants him to have 400iu of Vitamin D daily since breastmilk tends to be deficient in it.  Even though he's fair and we live in a very sunny climate, she said it's a good idea to supplement.  Anyone else?  What are your thoughts?  She said it tastes pretty bad... recommendations for how to administer?  TIA!

Re: BF babies - Vit. D?

  • We use the trivisol (fewer vitamins than polyvisol) and we administer 1/2 dose in each of 2 bottles a day. He hates it on its own but doesn't mind it in the bottles.
  • Loading the player...
  • you can put it on your nipple before nursing, put it on a spoon of ebm, i put it on my finger and R sucks it right off.
  • What brand/kind do you use and where do you buy it?  I'm not sure I love this idea, esp. since Kellymom.com has a whole article saying that MOST breastfed infants do not need supplementation, esp. if they get a small amount of sun exposure.
  • Our pedi recommended it as well, but it made DS so gassy and miserable (even 1/2 dose per day). So, I just made sure he got plenty of sun during the day. Like PP said, I'd try it in the bottle.
  • Our pedi recommended Poly-vi-sol and we give it to her 0.1 mL per day from the dropper.  She has no issues w/ taking it on its own.
  • I feel that my BM is good enough since back in the day when our parents had us there were no issues with VIT D and we are all ok.. I also try to put her in the sun daily instead of using the vitamins
  • We use Poly Vi Sol per pedi advice. We live in FL and he said they now recommend it to babies no matter the climate because even in FL most babies are vitamin D deficient.

DD didn't like the taste of it and actually gagged the first few times. Now she takes it like a champ. I just make sure and squirt it in her mouth all at once and it seems to be easier on her.
