Success after IF

Ugh - 1hr glucose came back abnormal

With the last pregnancy, my 1hr was borderline and so i had to do the 3 hour, which turned out fine.  (Although the test itself was horrific.  They couldn't get into any of my veins and it literally took 5+ hours.  It was one of the most miserable experiences of my last pregnancy.) This time, my 1hr was 13 over!  Do you think there's a chance it's still OK, or am I looking at a GD diagnosis?  I have gained a lot more weight this pregnancy.  I've just been so hungry and all I ever want is bread!  If I watch my diet better from now on, can I avoid getting GD, or will it just throw off the test results?

  • I'm pretty sure having GD doesn't have anything to do with what you eat.  You can't change the test results by avoiding certain foods.  Your fasting results for the 3 hour test may be affected based on what you eat the night before but not the rest of the readings.  When you drink the glucose drink you can't help how your body reacts to it.  I hope that makes sense.  Basically, even if you ate healthy throughout your pregnancy it wouldn't change if you get GD or not.

  • 13 over really isn't that bad.  I know people that had a lot worse 1hr results and go on to pass the 3hr.

Is there a reason why you are thinking about altering your diet instead of doing a 3hr asap?  I failed my 1hr last tues and I got the clear from my 3hr on Thurs.

  • GD isn't related to diet.  If you have GD, you have it...and if you don't, you don't.  There's nothing you can do about it.

The good thing is, lots and lots and lots of women who fail the 1 hour go on to pass the 3 hour....and, even if you fail the 3 hour, it isn't the end of the world.  GD is a pain in the butt, but it is totally managable, for the most part.

I had it with Parker...and did great with diet control.  I did add one medication towards the end just to get my fasting numbers down 5 or 7 points, but it was really no big deal.

    Good luck!!

  • I failed the 1 hour with both of my pregnancies (not by much, just a few points) and passed the 3 hour both times.  I hope this is the case for you!  Good luck!

This. I barely "failed" both tests. My GD was controlled by diet.
