Two Under 2

Toddler beds...I'm sure this has been posted 15945432156 times...

Please talk to me about the logistics of this. DD1 is sleeping just fine & not trying to climb out.

DD2 will be here in August, when DD1 will be almost 22 months.

Should I just leave her in her crib & buy another crib for DD2? Thanks so much!! :)

  • & I just saw a VERY similar post like 10 titles down lol.

If anyone cares to elaborate, please feel free, but I think I'll just fork out the cash for another crib...

  • Get a twin.  Dont waste your money on a toddler bed when you can just buy a twin.  We moved DS1 to his "big boy bed" at 18 months to prep for DS2 and it was no problem what so ever.  I am now working on moving DS2 to his "big boy bed" at 21 months to prepare for #3.  I would definitly not shell out money for another crib......

  • I am getting another crib most likley.  We will wait until after the baby is here since he/she will sleep in our room for at least a couple of months. I hoping DD stays in her crib for another year at least. I don't want her able to wander around at night.

  • DD was 14 months when DS was born, so we absolutely had a 2nd crib. We didn't move DD till 24 months.

This one will be 20 months younger than DS, so we are thinking about if we should move DS earlier (18 months) or just use DD's crib. Because we already have a 2nd crib, we'll probably leave DS in his crib until 24 months ish, but we're not 100%.

Anyways, to answer your question, by 22 months, yes I think you can move to a twin bed, and have just one crib. But it's up to you. :)

I don't think my 18 month old could have safely climbed into/out of a twin bed, even with one of those bed rails I wouldn't have risked it.  We spent $60 on a wood toddler bed at walmart, and it was the best $60 we spent.  If she fell out of bed she was 6inches from the ground.  We didn't move them until 21 months, it went REALLY well, and DD1 is 3 1/2 and still fits comfortably in it.  We will buy bunk beds when she turns 5.

I do agree about not shelling out money for another crib, unless you have a very uncontrollable child that needs to be contained.

  • Thanks everyone... It's such a tough decision. I'm excited about DD2 & would love to start on the nursery soon. My mom said she'd pitch in on a crib, but I hate to waste money. I'm just not sure if DD1 will be ready yet & I would hate to be up with 2 kiddos each night, when it could just be 1... Ugh. lol

This is just the beginning, isn't it? ;)

  • My two were 15 months apart.  My DD slept in a bassinet that I got used until she was too big to sleep in it.  By the time my DS was about 18 mos, we bought him an IKEA toddler bed. (They have one that is in between a infant mattress and a twin)  He just turned 4 and still sleeps in it (and he's a BIG 4 year old).  It is really a great bed, and the only down side is that you have to buy the sheets from IKEA do to the odd size.  We have 3 and that is perfect.

We have the Gulliver crib from IKEA and my DD sleeps on that with the side removed, and she is almost 3 now.  Although she will be getting kicked out of it in November when the new one arrives.

I totally understand not wanting to have two cribs.  You can always postpone it a little by buying a bassinet, which is oh so handy for those middle of the night feedings.  This way it will give you a few months to transition DD1 to a big girl bed.

    Good Luck!

We moved our daughter to her "big girl" room and bed (which is a twin mattress on the floor up against a wall with a bed rail on the other side) at 15 months, about 2 months befor DD2 was born.   She transitioned without any problem.  We wanted her to get a special new room and just use the nursery for the new baby since DD1 would be the one whose life was really changing.  We made a big deal about being a big sister and special big sister time, etc. She has done great with DD2 and we have had very few behavioral issues or sleep problems at all.

GL!!  Having two little girls is amazing!!

  • My DS is 21 months older then DD. We bought a toddler bed and made sure his room was really baby proofed and put up a baby gate at night. We did this when he was 18 months and he did great he'd get out of bed every once in awhile. It worked for us, but I'm not saying it will work for everyone. He was a great sleeper at that point so I wasn't worried about that either
