Time between SROM and Contractions starting?

For those of you who had their water break at the beginning of their labor, how long did it take before your contractions started? My water broke at 11am this morning and, as far as I can tell, contractions have not started yet. I'm hoping they will get going soon!

I wish I had an answer, but my water broke at the end of my labor.  Wishing you a good, safe labor!

  • half an hour.

  • For DS#1, it was about 5 hours between water breaking and contractions that were painful (not BH-like).  It took walking, lunges, walking, swaying, etc. to get things started.  From my water breaking to active labor was 12 hours and from water breaking to birth (with pushing) was about 26 hours.

For DS#2, it was about 5 min from water breaking to painful contractions and active labor.  From water breaking to brith was 6 hours.

Hope you're in labor by now.

Two boys already - ages 5 and 3...

  • No advice as mine came at the end, but wishing you lots of luck and labor dust and contractions-start-soon dust!!

  • I can't help either. My water broke at the beginning and 12 hours later I was started on Pit because I had no ctx.

Good luck! Lots of walking may help :)

  • It took about 9 hours.   My water broke at 2 pm and I didn't start feeling contractions until about 11pm that night.  Good luck var fctb_tool=null; function o6G14tiuBnE8(t) { fctb_tool=t; start(fctb_tool); }
  • My water broke at 9 pm. Contractions started at 12 pm but did not get serious until 5 am the next morning. DS was born at just before 2 pm. I hope that things are progressing for you. Good luck!

  • About an hour after my water broke I detected my first (faint) cntraction.  I had about 6 of them (5 minutes apart like mild menstrual cramps) before I decided that they were real.

    But absolutely nothing before that.

Hope things are moving along for you!

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • With #2 my water broke initially, and contractions started around 5-6 hours later.  I'm not sure what time exactly, because I had gone to bed maybe 4 hours after the water breaking, and I didn't look at the clock right away after they started.

When I called my homebirth midwife to give her a heads up that my water had broken, she said that contractions would probably START sometime in the next 24 hours (so obviously, she did not feel that my labor would/should necessarily conclude within 24 hours).

  • With DS1, my water broke to start things off.  A few hrs later, I was having timeable, painful ctx.  They slowed down during the ride to the hosp and sitting in the bed, getting admitted.  Took another hour or so of walking them back on to get active again.  18 hrs from water breaking to baby; no pit.

With DS2, I had a barely perceptible high leak.  Underwear just damp.  Nothing started...they broke my water completely and within minutes I was in a regular ctx pattern.  From them breaking it fully to baby was 3hrs.

    Good luck!

  • With both kids my water breaking was the first sign of anything and it took about an hour to an hour and a half for contractions to start.  And they were never the faint, mild cramping or light contractions.  When they started, they started hot and heavy with no build up.  My labors were very quick though (5.5 & 4.5 hours).

I hope by now you've got a little one in your arms!
  • Hey, I just saw this and the previous post. I was admitted a lot earlier than I wanted to be with my first son, too. Hope everything worked out, and can't wait to read your birth story!
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • With DS, water broke at 8pm stepping out of the car. Contractions started the next day at noon.  I was already admitted for preterm rupture of membranes at that point so I could see on the monitor exactly when they started.  With DD water broke during labor
