Cloth Diapering

NB diapers that worked from birth?

We are expecting #2 in August and I'm deciding on what diapers I should get. For #1 we used prefolds, fitteds, and covers but couldn't use them till his cord came off (which was forever!). This time I want to use tiny diapers from birth with the snap down for the cord. I know I could fold down the prefolds, but what about the covers. All of our covers last time rubbed his cord. I'm looking at AIO's mostly. Do these hold in NB poo. I remember just laying a prefold into a thirsties cover with the gussets and it did not work at ALL holding in the poo. So I feel like I need at least 2 strong barriers. Thanks for any help!

  • I think the thirsties xs covers have a notch for the cord. We used a snappi and never had any poop leaks.

  • Lil Joeys AIOs have fit my skinny 6lb twins from birth. Love the inner gusset to contain their runny poo!

This exactly. The Lil Joeys were my favorite when she still had her cord stump. They curl down around that area and kept everything in for us. We also used Bum Genius NB and Fuzzibunz XS although they didn't have the cord notch like the Lil Joeys do.

  • Another vote for Lil Joeys. We used those and GroVia NBs, but the gussets in the Lil Joeys made them my favorites. My little one was 6 lbs 15 oz and lost nearly a pound in the hospital - both brands fit him the whole time.

  • Thanks everyone for the input. I was leaning towards lil Joeys anyway, so thanks for the reassurance!

  • We used the Lil Joeys and like PPs mentioned they had perfect fit! My only complaint with them was how quickly she outgrew them. We also used the Swaddlebees Newborn Simplex and had excellent results -- good fit from the start and fold down for the umbillical cord. She can still wear them and she is over 12 lbs and 11 weeks old.

  • DS was only 5 lbs. 8 oz. when he was born and weighed less than 5 lbs. when we brought him home for the hospital, so none of our cloth diapers were small enough for him. My favorite newborn diapers were Clover fitteds, though.
  • My LO came home at 7lb6oz and GMD orange edge prefolds with proraps fit perfectly under his cord (as did Lil Joeys). We loved the prefold and cover combo. BumGenius XS came up way high on him (and still do). We never really worried about the cord though honestly. We used Thirsties Duo and Bummis covers which didn't "accommodate" the cord and had no problems. (His cord stump fell off on day 7.)

  • I used KL0 and XS Thirsties or Duo size one. I just folded the covers down to the level of the diaper and had no problems. DD's cord fell off after a week so I didn't have to worry about it for too long.

Workhorse fitteds in the orange and yellow edge fit her from the beginning. She is still able to wear both sizes at 4 months. Smile They have been my favorite so far. I like the yellow edge best because they have an extra soaker sewn in. The KL0s still fit but she'll be out of them soon.
