DH and I are a little overwhelmed with all the options of CD. We think we have decided on one brand but wanted to know what you ladies thought of it and if you have had any experience with it. We were going to go with the AIO Alva. Also, I haven't been able to find any information if I can use Bag Balm with CD. It was the only thing my mother was able to use on me that didn't make me blister. Will it ruin the CD or is it safe to use?
Re: CD question before buying
All the Alva's are actually pocket diapers, though I do hear they are going to start stocking NB AIO, but I don't know when. That said, I love my Alva diapers, but even on the smallest setting, they are pretty large, so they may not fit a newborn right away.
Also, you may want to try more than one brand/type so you can find out what you like and don't like.
Choosing cloth diapers can be overwhelming. There are so many options. I haven't tried the AIO Alva, but I will say that my experience was that AIOs in general were the easiest to use, followed by hybrids/all-in-twos. I liked aplix closures best initially, but ours wore out after a few months and they were too easy for our DS to take off, so we switched to snaps. We ended up using Best Bottom diapers and were generally happy with those (the hemp inserts irritated DS's skin and some of the elastic has worn out on a few of them). I like AI2s in general, though, because they're easy to use but less expensive than AIOs.
Bag Balm is not approved for use on people, so I personally wouldn't use it on my child. This is probably why you're having trouble finding information on it. It's meant for use on animals. Also, one of the main ingredients causes cancer in lab rats and is toxic to the human digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems. Read more here.
This. I say try 3-4 different brands before you commit to an entire stash. You'll be surprised at what you like once you have a baby butt infront of you.
I have never heard of bag balm, but I just did a quick search and looks like it has petroleum jelly in it....not sure but I don't think that is CD safe, but if you use it sparingly you could probably use it with a liner.
As for picking out diapers...many CD retailers will do a diaper trial, where they give you a sample of diapers, you pay for them but can return them for store credit if you don't like them. That's a good way to try out lots of different types and see what works without investing in a whole stash.
i just started cloth diapering my toddler, i Love my Alvas i just got in co-op (this is a great way you could go for them vs buying on their site) i just ordered some more, i also use Econobum prefolds with Econobum covers and Flip covers these are great cuz you only need so many covers and super cheap. i use Kawaii Goodnight heavy wetter pockets for nighttime.
i perfer snaps, and i cant give any insite on how to cloth diaper a newborn
Cj's BUTTer is a great cloth diaper friendly product i love it my daughter has senstive skin so can use alot of other creams.
you can also just get coconut oil from the grocery store.
Thanks for the info. I was checking out econobums as well. I am going to look into different diaper creams. I know bag balm is labeled for animals, but it has safer products in it than other ointments like desitin. I did read that sometimes they don't need diaper creams because cloth diapers are so gentle against the skin. Is that true?
We rarely use any cream. For a bit of redness, I use plain coconut oil. If he gets rashy, then I use a bit of cd-safe cream.
The Alva newborns are also pockets (a co-op I'm in did an order).
Alva are fine, but definitely get a few test kinds before you commit. Or just be ready to buy/sell if Alva don't work out for you.
