Med-free birth, then anything but natural aftermath

Having convinced myself that I would likely go 1-2 weeks late, no one was more surprised than me to have my water break, gush-style, at 2pm yesterday. I had *just* gotten home from a baby shower at my husband's office when it broke.

Because I am strep B positive, we called in right away and went to the hospital to get a first IV antibiotic treatment. We thought they'd send us home since labor can take so long with FTMs but they kept us after seeing how frequently I was contracting on the monitor (that was around 4pm). My contractions got more and more intense over a pretty short period of time: by 9:15pm or so I was fully dilated, and after 90 minutes of pushing, Augustus Frederick (Baby Gus) was born!

So, hooray, a med-free birth which is what I hoped for (though wasn't sure I could pull off)! Gus is perfect and we had some good skin-on-skin time right away (while the MW stitched me up from a 1st degree tear). He was 7lb13oz, 20.5 inches long, and scored 9's on both his Apgar tests.

Afterwards, however, the drama began: my placenta didn't want to come out. I had never heard of such a problem before, but no amount of "massaging" (which hurt like hell) made a difference so they called in an anaesthesiologist who administered 3 drugs that put me under so they could do the procedure. They also catheterized me. I was pretty loopy when I came to, and they kept us in the L&D room until my bleeding was under control, around 4am.

So I'm a bit knocked out from the post-delivery drama, and moving pretty slowly. But we're in love and still in awe that we're a family of three now!

I'll upload some pics if/when I can figure out how to!

  • Congrats! Glad you got your med-free birth. I had a similar placenta issue. After 40 minutes or so (and after catheterizing me to see if that would help me push), the MW did a manual extraction. It hurt like a b!tch - I screamed - but it was over fast.

Are you saying you had no drugs / sedation to get through the manual extraction??? Holy amazeballs. Apparently I screamed quite a bit too but that was AFTER getting the meds!

  • Congratulations and let me just say I can empathize. I had a fantastic fast labor with my first (although I did have an epi) and everything went super smoothly until the placenta got stuck and I had to have a D&C to get it out. It was very traumatic at the time. Hope you're doing okay. I dealt with it by really trying to focus on the positive - that my baby was there - but it still upsets me to think about from time to time.

No, it never even came up. Maybe they assumed since I didn't get an epi I wouldn't want anything. She sort of did it by surprise - I vaguely knew she was about to do something but she didn't really tell me much beforehand. Which was good.
