Csection and breathing tube thing?

Ok, I know my title is horrible for this post.  I have no idea what it is called though.  When my sister had her c/s she had this tube thing she had to breath into every so often after her c/s.  They said this would help her from getting sick after.  I didn't have that after my c/s last time and got a HORRIBLE cough that not only kept me up at all night for weeks, it hurt like hell to cough after surgery.  Did you have one of those tube things?  Anyone know what I'm talking about?

  • its called an incentive spirometer. i didnt get one, but i know they usually make you use them after surgeries. i never ended up with a cough or any problems even without it, but theyre pretty useful.

You rock for just telling me what it is called!  I tried looking it up and couldn't find anything!  Thanks :)

  • They mentioned bringing one to me after my c/s but never did. I would not hesitate to ask for one if you had a bad cough last time.

  • They gave me one and a special guy came in and gave me a big tutorial on how to use it, which I thought was pretty funny at the time.  I still never knew what it was for, I'm glad I didn't need it!

  • I had one and it didnt help me, but I have myasthenia gravis.  I had to get breathing treatments.  I get a gasping problem after my sections...probably associated with the Myasthenia.

  • I know what it is, but I never got one.  Coughing, deep breathing, and getting moving and out bed early on do pretty well too.

Interesting. Did you have general ansasthesia? I have never seen it used in someone that was young, healthy, could get up right away, and did not have GA.

I stood several hours after surgery and walked the next morning (my son was born at 6:47pm) so I think if you are moving and breathing well, it's not really needed.

  • I didn't have one. My cough was caused by the extremely drive hospital. With Lucas, I brought a little humidifier and filled a bucket with water and kept it behind my bed to keep moisture in the air and I didn't have a cough at all.

  • I had one. I didn't use it as often as I was told to, but if you make sure you are breathing as deeply as possible regularly then it should be fine.

I had one and didn't use it much.   On top of all the other complications I developed, I wound up with a really bad case of pneumonia.   I used it  more once I stablized in CCU and after getting moved to a step down unit.

I work on a surgical floor, we give them to everyone who isn't moving around too much. Its really just to keep you breathing normal/deep so you don't get pneumonia. When people are just laying around in bed/had abdominal surgery they tend to breath shallow, the incentive spirometer just keeps your lungs 'movin and groovin' haha thats what I tell my patients! As long as you are getting up and moving around and breathing normal/can take deep breaths you should be good.
