Prefolds to fitteds?

I don't think I thought this one through...
A few weeks ago someone posted what looks to be a great tutorial about how to convert prefolds to fitteds. I thought to myself, I could totally do that! So I bought 12 GMD NB and 12 GMD small sized prefolds and sat down last night to get started on them. Just out of curiosity, I compared a stretched out NB GMD workhorse to the NB prefold and it's a good 3in longer then the prefold. Now, I bought the prefolds gently used, so they're already prepped. I haven't prepped the workhorses yet, so I realize there will be some shrinkage, but I don't know if it will be 3in worth. I'm worried that if I go ahead and turn these prefolds into fitteds they'll be too small and be useless.
My question is, should I buy a larger size prefold in order to turn them into fitteds? And how big should I buy them in order to get a NB or small sized fitted out of them? Or am I worrying about nothing?
