XP: Cloth Diaper Alternative?

We exclusively cloth diaper, and we are getting ready to go on an international trip. My husband and I have compromised that we will get disposable diapers for the plane ride (we are staying with family and will have access to a washing machine, and I don't mind doing laundry to escape having to talk to my in-laws... ha ha).

Which brand of disposables would you recommend? 7th Generation are chlorine free. Which chemicals are the ones to avoid? Is there a better brand in terms of being chemical free?

Which size would you recommend? In the case of 7th Generation, size 3 runs 16-28lbs, and size 4 runs 22-37lbs. My daughter is one year old and 20.5lbs, so I'm thinking size 3, but I'm asking if you have personal experience with 7th Generation that would make you think I should size up. Thanks!

Re: XP: Cloth Diaper Alternative?

  • I haven't used 7th gen in a long time, but I remember them running small. My LO is just about to move up to 4's in her huggies and she is exactly the same size as YD, so I'd size up if I were you.

    Have a great trip!!

  • When we travelled we used Nature Babycare and I really liked them.  But then as DD got older and we had the occasional need for disposables we actually ended up getting Target Up and Up diapers and really liked those.  I suppose it depends on your reasons for CDing but for us it was mainly cost savings.  The environmental benefit of disposables (whether they biodegrade or not) really doesn't matter if you put them in trash bags (which we did while traveling since we were changing DD in other people's homes or airports or hotels) and to buy "natural" or other biodegradable options seemed to be so much more expensive.  Now, of course this doesn't address chemicals in diapers but we did just try to stay away from things like the Pampers Baby Dry issue and anything that was scented.

  • Thank you, ladies! I decided to size up just in case. My concern is mostly around the chemicals that touch her hiney. It was in part due to cost savings too, but my addiction to Hyena Cart may negate that benefit. :)

  • We don't CD, but I wanted to chime in... we used 7th generation for a while, and they run REALLY small.   So definitely get at least one size bigger than you'd think!

    Because we're fancy like that.

  • We cloth diapered for 2 years and we used Nature Babycare as our back-up disposables when needed.  I don't remember how the sizes run.
