Teachers and Fall Maternity Leave...

Are you taking any time off in the fall? If so, how much?

I really haven't thought much about it yet because unfortunately in my district, if anyone catches wind I'll be taking time off, I will get a class full of behavioral problems.

Re: Teachers and Fall Maternity Leave...

  • I have been verbally offered a job for the fall. Assuming things work out, I plan on being there from the beginning. I think it depends on your due date and when school starts for you. For me, the time between 41 weeks (the latest my dr likes to let people go) and the beginning of training for teachers new to the district is 8 weeks.

Yes- I would have about 9 weeks in between.  But if I do take time off, I plan on going for the first week to meet the kids, etc.

  • I'm taking 13 weeks off in the fall, as long as he doesn't come before the end of school. I'm working pre planning, when he'll be about 7 or 8 weeks old, because we're moving schools so I want to be the one to set up my classroom. I'm taking 13 weeks off after that, which puts me returning to school right after Thanksgiving. I'm planning to take 9 weeks unpaid and then 4 weeks paid, since I have a lot of vacation time saved up. He'll be about 5 months old when I go back, so I'm really excited about it!

  • I have been teaching for a long time so I have almost enough time to get me to Christmas break.  But, I keep thinking about how hard it will be to come back in January to what is essentially someone else's class.  Also, I have tons of stuff that I am worried about getting ruined or misplaced, etc.

  • I'll be going back the second week of December. Big financial difference, but one we're willing to sacrifice for.
Not very excited about someone else starting my year off for me, but know that it will all be worth it.
    Blessings! :)
  • I'm due June 6th and the last day of school is June 5th.  Teachers have to report back August 13th but I don't plan on taking any time off other than summer break.  We have to pack up our entire classrooms so they can remove the carpets.  I can't imagine someone else unpacking my stuff and setting up my classroom, let alone starting off the year, getting routines and procedures in place, etc.  I think I would just be more stressed when I came back if I took time off at the beginning of the year.  With my daughter, I only took off 6 weeks before going back so I think I will be okay.  (Ask me again in August, though, I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune!)

  • My early maternity leave was approved so I will be returning for the first day.  Had it not been approved, my plan was to take the first teacher work day off where we just sit and listen to presenters all day.

  • No, I'm going back during preplanning days. I know if I miss the first month or even few weeks of school my HS students would feel like they "own the room" instead of me. I'd never get authority back.

  • Our last day is June 16th and we go back right around Labor Day. I am taking off until December but I teach computers so I don't have a real class to worry about. I would probably not be able to take so much time if I did because I'd be nervous about missing so much with them.
  • I am taking first quarter off. I teach at a 4x4 block schedule school so there is enough space to not schedule any classes for me for that quarter.  I am actually going to go in for the first in service days because I don't want to waste all my sick days. Plus, we are hiring a new teacher in my department, and I want to make sure he or she  settles in okay. Thank goodness for accruing sick days!

  • I am due June 21.  The last day of school is June 25 and school starts right after Labor Day.  I am planning on going back in January, possibly taking the whole year off if we can financially (I don't have very much sick time).  It will be hard to probably come back in January but I REALLY want to be able to stay home as long as possible.
