Success after IF

Is a HSG horrible?

I go next week to check to see if Essure worked and my tubes are closed.  Getting Essure was HORRIBLE during the procedure.  After I was fine but during I was crying.  I am really worried that the HSG is going to be just as bad.  They told me to take motrin before hand but I did that for the Essure too.  Will I be ok to drive myself (they didnt say)?

Re: Is a HSG horrible?

  • I just went a week ago and it was easy peesy.  Wouldn't sweat it.  I drove.  I did take 800 mg advil beforehand.  I was super anxious and didn't even realize it was over!

  • I did not enjoy mine.  But I was definitely able to drive.

  • I think I am in the minority, but it was probably the most painful thing I've ever had done :( My DH drove me home and I cried a lot on the way home.  Not to scare you, but it was not as easy as I thought.  Good thing is is that it is really short.  Again, I think I am in the minority...I thought IUIs were kind of painful, too, and most people think it's a breeze.

  • I had a hard time with mine, and would not have driven if I had an option!  I took 800 Advil before!
  • Mine hurt for about 3 seconds.  I could definitely drive myself home.

  • I've had two - the first was mildly uncomfortable (very mild, totally no big deal) - the second was NOTHING - seriously barely felt anything at all.  I took 600 mg of advil prior to the procedure both times.  Easy peasy.  I hope yours is a piece of cake too!
    Wheee!

  • Ughhh I found it to be horrible but I have partially blocked/scarred tubes and also had a bad reaction to the dye. So they pumped me full of pain meds and sent me home to rest. I was not able to drive. But from what I hear, my experience is unusual.

  • I feel like it is common for HSGs to be horrible before pregnancy when everything is still in tip top shape up there.   After having been pregnant and delivering, they are usually much more tolerable.   I hope it is no big deal for you!!!

  • I had 2.  The first was awful.  I cried during and immediately after the procedure.  However, once it was done, I was fine and could have driven.  The 2nd was nothing  I really didn't even know when they had started.  It was way quicker than the 1st, and I didn't feel anything.  Definitely could have driven that day.
  • I had an HSG while TTC #1 and it was the most pain I'd ever felt, and they had to do it twice so it lasted quite a long time.  The pain stopped the instant it was over, however, and I totally could have driven home.

I had an SHG while TTC #2 and it felt just like a standard u/s, no pain whatsoever.  Some people have as much pain with an SHG as with an HSG; I think a lot of how much pain one feels with either procedure has to do with whether you've been pg and/or given birth before.

  • for me it wasn't horrible.  It wasn't the most pleasant experience but it wasn't the most painful.  From what I have read on here and other places it varies greatly from person to person.

Some Dr.'s tell you to take some ibuprofen before.

I couldn't because Im allergic to iodine and I had to take things for that instead.

My first one was awful.  I started shaking (like some weird kind of spasms) when they administered the dye, and I was actually in quite a bit of pain.  When the procedure was done, the shaking ended, but I'm glad my hubby was there to drive me home because I was pretty freaked out by the whole thing.  My next one was not fun, but was much less traumatic.

  • My was uncomfortable...but it was over quickly and I drove myself back to work.

  • I think it can be a lot more painful if your tubes are blocked/closed.  Mine only hurt like a b!tch because the nurse was horrible at inserting the cath (I could seriously feel it pushing on the inside of my ute).  I took a Valium prior to mine and I felt fine to drive home (though I didn't because of said Valium)

  • I had one HSG 5 years ago and I still remember how horrible it was.   When we went back to the RE for baby #2,  I was terrified that they would make me do the HSG again.  Much to my relief I didn't have to repeat it.

This is what my doctor said - post-pregnancy, it's not as uncomfortable for most people.  Just some cramps.  I'm not sure how Essure changes things since the tubes are blocked.

  • I was able to drive but mine was horrible! It took them over an hour to complete. They found I had a tilted uterus (we didn't know this before) and ended up having to try out 2 different cathedars on me. They kept pulling them out and putting them back in to reposition and everything. It felt like they were scraping my insides out!

They said they never have had that issue before and kept apologizing for the pain they were causing but I didn't expect it to be that bad! Hopefully your experience won't be anything like mine though (and luckily, most aren't!) Wishing you the best!!

  • My HSG was not painful at all.  I didn't even take anything before it.  I drove myself home- and then got on a plane that night to go to my MIL's memorial service in Virginia.
  • Mine SUCKED!!  I threw up and then got stomach sick in the bathroom.  Found out years later that my path is a little twisted which is why it hurt like a mother!

  • I think people have vastly different experiences with this,  but I'll add another positive one to the mix. Mine was fine-- some cramping but no big deal. My tubes were open, so I don't know if that's what made it easier.

This. Mine was excruciating. It was over 7 years ago and I still remember. And nothing was wrong with me (no blocked tubes or anything).

This except I took darvocet before and a valium. It was terrible - and now that I've had active labor, it was very similar to that.  I bled alot after it so whatever happened there was a good reason it hurt.  Spotting I think is normal but I was bleeding.  Anyway - he didn't find anything but I always wonder if it was because something got pushed out of the way...(just based on how bad it hurt).  But it doesn't hurt everyone!
