Stairs

When will you start to teach LO to go up and down the stairs? Will you wait till they're walking? Will you put it off for as long as possible? Are you already training LO?

Well, he's already started climbing the stairs on his first attempt, so we'll probably start sooner rather than later.  My FIL has tried to get him to work on down the steps, but he can't get the concept of feet first, so it'll take some time!

He climbs up stairs all the time (with a spotter, of course). We'll probably wait a little while to teach him to crawl down. He's kind of a peanut, so I'm guessing waiting until he's a bit taller and stronger will help.

He's been crawling up the stairs (with me right there) for almost two weeks now. I'm too scared to let him try going down the stairs at this point, I'm not even sure how that would work... the only two choices I can think of - crawling backwards or face first, don't seem like things I'm comfortable with. Right now I steer him away from the top of the stairs if he goes that way, which he doesn't really do. When he becomes interested in going down the stairs, I'll put up a gate or teach him how... hopefully he'll be walking by then.

DS just climbed up one day... with me spotting of course. The dog was sitting at the top of the steps, so I think he was trying to get him. :o) I've never seen the dog so patiently waiting. We don't actively try to teach him to do it, but from time to time will spot him and let him do it.

Drives MIL nuts, but he's got to learn at some point!

We don't have stairs at our condo, but my mom spots him while he crawls up the stairs at her house (LO is there during the day). He's getting pretty decent at it, which means the baby gate is getting installed soon. It will probably be a while before we teach him how to get down the stairs on his bottom.

We will probably start working on how to climb down soon. Like pp, she already figured out how tho climb up on her own.

For those that have taught going down before...did you teach them to go down backwards on their knees? Or go down facing forward, on their bum?

N's been climbing the stairs for several months now Tongue Tied

He can get up them at lightning speed and is just now learning how to back down them.  I haven't actively taught him - he is just sort of figuring it out on his own.

My LO has been doing the stairs for a few months now. We didn't teach her she just did it herself. We're working on teaching her to go downstairs.

DD just started climbing the stairs.  We tried to show her how to go down (backwards, facing the stairs)- but she was not a fan- she wanted to see what was in front of her.  I think it could be a long time before she understands the "going down the stairs" concept.

Charlie crawls up and down really well now.  He goes down facing the stairs.  His newest thing is that he wants you to hold his hands so he can walk up and down instead of crawl.
