Sheets & changing pad covers

We got 10 crib sheets and 4 changing pad covers at our baby shower. I think this might be overkill but I'm a FTM so not really sure how many you go through.  I know we will be doing a lot of laundry but it will be nice to not have to worry about it if there's a blowout in the middle of the night. How many do you think you need on hand?

Re: Sheets & changing pad covers

  • We used 3 sheets in the beginning with my bonus son. I never really went more than 3 days without doing laundry so it wasn't an issue, however, if you're planning on using the crib as a toddler bed, then you might want to keep more of them. Since your child could be in the bed for 3 years or so. I still don't think you need more than 5 of them though.  The changing pad covers are over kill. You'll be surprised by how often you don't actually use the changing pad after a little while.

I would definitely take some of the crib sheets back if you can. We only have 2 changing pad covers but I also have a few water proof pads that I'm putting on top of the changing pad as well.

  • 10 sheets is definitely overkill. I'd say keep 3-4 and return the rest. As for changing pad covers, 2 is enough.

  • I would say 5 sheets & 3 pad covers would be plenty.  On our worst day we dirtied 2 covers in a row (we only had 2 so then we just used a towel until laundry was done).  If your going through more than 2-3 sheets per week you need to try different diapers, or food if it's a spitup problem.

  • I would keep5 crib sheets and take 5 back.  It's nice to have backup and the sheets will last into his toddler years.  I honestly would not take the changing pads back lol.  DS, in on day caused a mess on 2 of his changing pads.  While on maternity leave, I was not able to do laundry as often as I wanted.
  • We have two sheets and two pad covers. Another sheet would probably be nice, so I'd say keep 3-4 and return the rest. 2 pad covers are plenty. In the early days, we put down a disposable changing pad for poopy diapers so we wouldn't have to wash the whole cover if we made a mess. Now that DD is older, I only wash the cover when I'm doing a load of her laundry anyways (once a week-ish).

  • I have two changing pad covers and 3 crib sheets. Only once did I ever run into a problem where I ran out of crib sheets and that was because my son was sick and kept throwing up everywhere.

When they are newborns they tend to get poo on their changing pads quite often so while they are still tiny I just used a changing mat OVER the pad so I didn't have to wash them every single day.

10 is definitely overkill, but I'd probably keep 3 of the changing pads.

  • we have 3 crib sheets, 2 cotton and 1 fuzzy-ish knit carter's one for the winter.

DS has severe reflux.  he threw up constantly the first year of life and we never needed more.

We used 2 changing pad covers, one in the wash and one on.

  • I'm a FTM but a friend suggested that I alternate waterproof covers with crib sheets and put several layers on the mattress.  Then in the middle of the night if there is a mess, I can just take one layer off.

  • My Best friend only has 2-3 for each of her babies.  She told me that you will be doing laundry every day so you don't need more than that.  I was going to get 4 just to be safe. 10 seems like overkill to me.

I agree 2-3 of each is perfect.  You could do with 2, but it's nice to have that third if LO gets a stomach virus that lasts a few days.

I have a friend who recommended the same thing (2 layers, I think), so I would probably keep 3-4 of the sheets and return the rest.

I have heard of doing this too, but I have also heard that if you have more than 2 layers (I think) it makes the mattress too soft and causes a suffocation hazard. Anyone else heard that or was it just fear-mongering?

I read that as well...I've read only a waterproof pad and one sheet is enough in order to keep the mattress firm.
