Interviewing at dream job- 23 weeks preg

I was actively looking for a new job before i found out that I was unexpectedly expecting several months ago. Turns out they kept my resume in one of those internet job black holes, and called me for my dream job. Pharma sales in my background in my area. I've been trying to break into pharmaceutical sales for the past 2 years. I had my phone interview today and have been scheduled for a f2f next week. I'm visibly showing but am like a size small usually. Do I mention it and reiterate commitment to the job? Do I try to come off as kinda fat? Do I rock out in a tight fitting maternity suit?

The recruiter said at home training would be the month of June, followed by a 3 wk on site training (flying out of state) in July. I am due Aug. 22nd. Any advice ladies? Please help. I realize its illegal for them to ask, but not mentioning kinda seems like a lost opportunity to reassure them I could kick ass.

  • I wouldn't mention it.  Being pregnant has nothing to do with your ability to do the job and do it well.  I would wear something professional that makes your belly not as noticeable, but don't actively try to hide it.  Then just put your best foot forward and dazzle them with your skill set/personality.  You're far enough away from your due date that you could really kick butt and prove yourself if they don't drag their feet too much with the hiring process.  I would also suggest not discussing maternity leave, benefits, etc. until you have an offer in hand.

In terms of training out of state, that is a little tricky.  My understanding is that you can fly up to 36 weeks, so it would depend on when in July the training is.  Again, I would probably wait until you have an offer to discuss details on that.  If its early July its probably completely do-able.  Good luck!

  • I work in Pharma and I would tell them, the question is would you be ok with going for training? When I went to training there were pregnant women there. If they want you, they want you. Good luck! I love my job :-)
  • I'm in HR and would usually recommend against discussing the pregnancy in interviews. However, my concern for you in this situation would be involving the upcoming training that it sounds like you may not be able to make. I think if you discuss you plans for maternity leave, etc that may make it easier for them to picture you in the opportunity.  Plus, it's not like you recently applied, so it's a little bit on them to deal with the fact that your situation has changed.

If it's not discussed, illegal or not, I'd be concerned they might write you off. If you were earlier in your pregnancy, I'd say to hold off on discussing it, but I do think it's relevant at this point. Even though it's illegal to discriminate against someone who is PG- they can come up with any number of legal reasons to not select you for the role. So I would say that, in this specific situation, it would benefit you to explain how you can work around your pregnancy/maternity leave and still be a very solid employee for them. GL!

Thank you for the advice. I'm leaning towards the same plan. I would be OK with going to the training. I'm due late august with my first baby so if I got home before July 22nd, then I would technically still be in week 35 and be able to fly. The flight is 2.5 hours. Really not a big deal, the training though would be 3 weeks on my own. But Im willing and able. Just take me!! lol
