My midwife won't induce me. At all. (Vbac)

I went today for my 40 week appointment. And she said i'm 2 maybe 3 cm, still thick, baby still at -2. I asked her about induction if baby just doesn't drop. She said "we don't induce vbacs". So at what point do you cut off? She didn't have an answer. I told her I am all for going to 41 weeks, i'm okay with that - nervous, but okay. But after that, i'm not. I am a nervous wreck about something happening. I'm nervous about having a big baby that I couldn't push out anyways. Or needing to push harder, hense putting more stress on my c/s scar because baby is big.

If I need a c/s, so be it. I'm not heart-set on a vbac. Sure another vbac would be great, but at this point my sole interest is a healthy baby.  I have big babies - my DS2 was 9lbs at 39 weeks, DS1 was 8.5lbs at 38 weeks. I feel like this girl may have a big head too which is why she isn't dropping anymore. 2 other midwives i've seen (including the one who delivered DS2 via my first vbac) said they would slowly induce me before they let me hop right into a c/s. Now this one, who is in the same practice won't? Or maybe she's just super pro-vbac. I dunno. No, I don't want a c/s, but it may very well be my only option if they dont' agree to an induction. So I Tuesday, I have an ultrasound to check my fluid, an NST, and an appointment... all with the midwife who delivered my DS2. I really hope I don't need that appointment, but as things are looking, I will. I'll be 40+4. Next Friday i'll be 41... and that's "d" day for me. Most vbacs aren't allowed to go past 41... I just want all my midwives to be on the same damn page. Either you induce, or you don't.

Sorry for my rambling... i'm just frustrated with my midwife. I want a definitive answer on how long I can go that ALL the midwives deem safe. Not what one says is safe, and one doesn't. I'm certain i'm going overdue... i'm already set on that in my mind. I just want to deliver a healthy baby.

  • If it makes you feel better, you'll almost certainly go into labor on your own before 42 weeks.  And if you really feel strongly, I am sure you can either advocate strongly that your midwife listen to you and induce or find an OB who would induce between 40-41 weeks. It's your body and what you want isn't unheard of.

  • I thought that was normal actually. I've been to 3 OB practices in my area and none of them (including all of the OBs, which is probably 14 or so!) will induce with a vbac.

I would imagine that the stress of induction and the strong contractions that pitocin can cause would put more stress on your scar than a large baby. I believe that's the reason they will not.

My understanding is the pitocin can cause contractions that put the uterus in danger w a VBAC.  No personal experience, obviously.

Ask about other induction methods, though?  Knowing you will need a c-section if they don't work.

  • They won't induce with Cervadil, or anything involving the cervix. And I was told nipple stim as a inducer is also a no-no. I had my membranes stripped Thursday, and she may have done it today (and just done it gentler than last time) because she was up there a while. I had pitocin while in labor with my DS2 - but it wasn't to start labor, I stalled so they did a slow pit.

  • Im sorry it is very frustrating. I was a VBAC hopeful as well, and they would not induce me. I personally was comfortable going to 42 weeks and so was my OB. I had NST and AFI to make sure everything was fine. I finally went into labor at 41.2, I'm glad I gave my body the chance to go into labor. I would see what happens at your next appointment, since you have had a vbac before and if your other midwife would do a gentle induction I would try and go for that. I hope it happens real soon for you!

Thanks for writing this. I appreciate it. I'm also afraid of an old placenta... when I had my DS2 at 39 weeks, my midwife said my placenta was looking "old" and used up. So I have no idea what happens or how they would know this if I kept on going. I'm getting NST's/ultrasounds... but it's not like they can see the placenta. It's so nervewracking.

  • 2nd+ babies don't always drop before labor happens. My 2nd dropped just a couple days before she was born, my 3rd didn't till I was in labor and Livi (#4) didn't "drop" at all, she was still very high up during labor, even after my water broke.   I really hope that baby makes her way out soon.

  • No one here including my MWs will induce a vbac. After my out of hospital vbac I know it never would have happened in a hospital. If you trust your provider try and stay patient. If you feel like at a certain point you want to cAll a rcs, do it. I would listen to your gut on that one. GL, sending you lots of "start labor now" vibes.
