Questions to ask Doc as I'm approaching labor...

Any suggestions on questions I should be asking my doctor as my tentative due date (May 20th) rapidly approaches?

I feel like such a dolt every time I leave with nothing more to say than, yup she's kicking away. Leaving my appointment today my DH was like, you didn't have any questions for the Dr.? Which left me feeling 'empty handed' for lack of better words...In my defense though, I'm exhausted & sure you ladies can sympathize.

Re: Questions to ask Doc as I'm approaching labor...

  • I always have tons of questions when I'm not at the doctor, but I feel like I have nothing to ask when I get there! lol I've started writing down my questions as I go throughout the week and then I review the list before the doctor comes in the room. Depending on what type of birth you want would determine what kind of questions you ask. If you are unsure about anything or feeling nervous now is the time to ask for clarification!

  • A couple I've asked over the past few weeks...

-What method of contact do you want me to use if I think I'm in Labor?  (My dr. said go w/ the 5-1-1 rule and go immediately to L&D-some want you to call them first)

-Is there a way to preregister at my hospital? (Gets ppwk out of the way, didn't offer at orig. hospital we were going to use)

-How far are you comfortable with me traveling/should I restrict how far away I am from the hospital at any point? (DH has a work send off 2 hr drive away this weekend, asked and found out dr would prefer I stay closer).

These are the big ones I can think of that I've had.  Hopefully they help!

  • I'm in the same boat as you.  One thing I've thought of recently was whether or not she allows any snacks during labor?  Very minor detail, I know, but it's all I've got at the moment.  The nurse on our L&D tour just mentioned that some drs say nothing at all and others allow hard candy and/or popsicles.  Don't really care one way or another, but, if she allows those snacks, I want to be prepared because I heard that ice chips don't always cut it.  :-)  Good luck!
